Front suspension rattles
I am really surprised that noone else complains about this.
My car has been constantly rattling and I have been to the dealer a few times and paid them to diagnose it .
The idea is that I dont want to waste money on unnecessary parts.
well I have done front and rear control arms and wheel bearings and rear sway bar bushings and the thing still has been as noisy as ever.. rumbling all along ..
the moreI thought about it and the more I lost confidence in the dealer, I decided that I should check out the front sway bar links.
now some of you have had the sway bar bushings done.. and the dealer did tell me to do the rear ones. My rear ones were perfect when I removed them- I dont think they were contributing to any rattles. But they were cheap and easy to do. no change in rattles from any of the dealer recommendations.
the font sway bar bushings are a different story. I have read horror stories of lowering the subframe and endless alignment issues. I can see mine and there is no apparent wear or degrading of the rubber. I decided not to touch them .
So I was getting ready to check the front sway bar links and then just the last few days the ratlles have gone away.. very suddenly the front end was quiet.
checking the links means that you need to have both wheels up in the air, and that needs a jackstand on both sides. You need to have the suspension hanging freely to check for play in the links. Ive been lazy about doing this.
Anyway when I got the car in the air, I saw the left side link was totally ripped apart at the lower joint. the swivel was ripped right off the sway bar. It was disconnected and that is why the rattles stoppped. I think with new links it may finally be quiet.
So here I go with another couple hundred bucks in parts into this heap.....
Do you all just live with rattles or are all your links ripped off? sheesh...

RE: Front suspension rattles
Will check, but I don't ever get rattles and I've done such a thorugh look through of the S that I'm sure if something were broke or ripped, I'd have seen it. I've had the four wheels of the ground at the same time, and suspension doesn't give much play and the car is in great condition. Do you think it might be an X thing, or simply one specific thing with your car. Either way, I hope that things go well with you as you fix your baby and I hope that the rattle goes away after you fix everything!

It is really too bad that the car has been so awful.. I am fanatical and meticulous. I insist that even a used car should drive perfectly all the time.
every part has a useful life. and when that part reaches the end of the life it needs to be renewed.
when a car is new everything should be good for a while and as it ages it becomes a juggling act to stay on top of all the parts as they wear out or fail one by one.
I have expectations based on sound engineering knowledge and on my experice with my cars and the cars of all the people that I know. My expectations are that a well maintained car sould provide months and months of good operation and failures should be prevented with rigorous maintenance.
The Jag has failed to meet my expectations.
the Body is failing... the drive train has failures, the suspension has failures.. the brakes are awful even when working like new. the clutch is just terrible to use smoothly. several electronics things dont work right. Just todayI had to replace the hood release cable. both power seats have broken motors..
None of that is normal wear and tear.
I dont wanna be a nay sayer but sheesh.. I cant get even a week of driving done with the car running as it should.
It is only 4 years old...and the dealer does not give a rats ***....
I have every record from new.. I have spoken to the previous owner and the dealer that did all the previous work. I am confident that the previous owner was also fanatical about taking care of the car.
I guessI should say something positive.. the motor seems quite good.

RE: Front suspension rattles
my front right is still rattling, I put 2 new sway bar links in and the noise is back. I really hoped it would be better.
so i have new control arms, new entire hubs with the new bearings. new sway bar links. I just cant figure out why there is still noise..
it really almost sounds like the new bearing is noisy also.
I put my summer tires on and that has taken away some of the vibration, I guess the winter tires were not right. I did get them load force balanced, then complained and had it re-done. I assumed all winter that the vibration was a drive line thing. now with the summer tires i guess thhe problem was the winter tires all along.

Bo fixed it by changing the tires, and I believe some Italian model did Dunhills shaft. Or was it the dealer that changed his driveshaft? Not sure!

I liked the way you slipped it in there, I wonder if Dunhill did as well

RE: Front suspension rattles
Hey Guys,
I still have the noise on the front tires after 2load force balancing/rotating. So, i went to good year today and had one of their mechanic ride in the car with me. He heard the noise and said it was not normal. He said it is probably the CV Joints. So, I am going to take it back for the 3rd fukking time and if they don;t fix it i am gonna go crazy. I don't think the idiot mechanics at the dealer know what they are doing.

I have changed so many parts on my front end and the rattle is the same ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh
now i want to do the sway bar bushings but I hear too many horror stories about lowering the subframe and screwing up the alignment.. I think my new wheel bearings are already getting noisy too..
