Fuel gauge reading Half tank when full

Dr. Dome, from the sounds of things, you have a failed fuel level sensor. You have 2 sensors in your fuel tank and if one is stuck/failed to the empty condition, it will cause your fuel tank to read erroneously. You can get a feel for which one is failed by putting the instrument cluster into its diagnostic mode and in there, you will be able to scroll through and see if it is "fuel 1" or "Fuel 2" that is failed low. It reads out in a number between 0 and 255 and anything around about 20 is considered empty.

Well thanks Thermo and dpk. My only issue is my instrument cluster does not read like my other 3(meaning it just reads the trip and mileage. Do you know location of these sensors. Seeing that I have dropped the one in my parts car getting to it is not a problem... Finding the time to do it is. HAHA I have a shop with 2 lifts so jag dealer can kiss it. Could make it easy and just swap out the tank.

Dr Dome, if you look at the top of the tank, you should see 2 rings about 6" in diameter. Under those rings is a complex of stuff (fuel pump, pickup, and level sensor). You spin off the ring, pull out the assembly and then put in a new one (assuming you know which side is bad) and you should be good to go. You can buy a new level sensor and it will snap right into the complex as everything from my experience on other vehicles is just clipped into place. If you have the lifts, then you are halfway there. when I did my truck, I had to drop the tank with the truck on the ground and use a jack to balance the 6 foot long fuel tank on. That was fun, NOT!!!!!
