gear box msg

hie could anyone with some info help me on this. my jag x type auto engine management light came on when i was on the motorway . i stopped and checked the water and it was ok. drove for about 120 miles to home. i started the car today and it was not going above 30 miles p/h and then just stoped the aa came and he said its the gearbox fault now its stuck in park bt its still starting ..i would like more info b4 i take it to the garage on monday cheers...

oothus This is if you have a automatic.
Did you mean the gear selector won't move out of park or when you move the selector the trany is still in park? If it's the gear selector try this.Turn the key to #2 position but don't start the car, put your foot on the brake and listen for a click. When you put your foot on the brake it activates a solenoid to unlock the selector so you can put it in gear.If this is the case there is a hole on the selector to manually release the lever.(it might have a cap over it but it's there some where)stick a object in to release the lever so you can at least drive the car.
If it's the trany I haven't a clue,maybe linkage or the park pawl or is the car sitting on a steep incline and there is pressure on the park pawl.Try rocking the car if it's mechanical it should release with the key on and your foot on the brake peddle lightly
