RE: gearbox fault
About a year ago we had a problem slightly different whereby complete power to the wheels would be lost, but after shutting down for as little as 15 to 30 seconds the car would start up and operate normally, until the next failure that is. The throttle body was replaced which eliminated the failures.
I have been told there is a small part on the throttle body which goes bad and only costs about $100, however, it cannot be bought seperately and the entire throttle body must be changed, at a cost of $1200 or more.

Hey Jags, sounds like Max is on the right track there mate.
We seem to have had a few issues along those lines on those vehicles.
However, if that does turn out to be your problem, try sending a pm to Ken@britishparts from this site as he may be able to offer you a good price!
Anyone else with advice, chip in an help a newbie out.

RE: gearbox fault
had similar problem, had codes ran and was told probably a o2 sensor. checked the air filter for the heck of it and saw a hose(vac) at top running across from air filter, split wide open, replaced, reset codes, 1200 miles later, runs like a champ. total cost $5.00. hope this helps. good luck, Bill

RE: gearbox fault
So did the replaced air filter really "fix" your problem? It would be nice to see some follow-up. I am having a similar problem. 2002 S-type with gearbox fault code and a P0795 on the ODE2 reader...
The car is new to me 2 days ago. I pulled the airfilter and it was oilly, dirty and lots of dust and animal fur, etc.
I left it out for a 2 minute spin to see if the gearbox fault would remain off or not. It came back on within 2 minutes or so. The cehck engine light is still on. They did not reset that when they read the code.
Any other advice? Thanks.

2004 Xj8 GearBox fault
Same problem, i was driving down the highway at around 30mph and the "gearbox fault" comes up. the car appears to stay in 2nd gear. i pull over and shut the car off. i restart it and the "gearbox fault light cleared and everything seemed to work just fine, drove it 200 mile after and still no message again.
