pnyklr, 2 things come to mind.
1) when she got the car washed, did she have them clean under the hood? If so, they may have just sprayed under the hood which has been known to cause misfires due to water getting down around the plugs because of the high pressure water.
2) where did she get gas from? It is possible that the station she went to had a little bit of water in their gas and what you were seeing is the water coming through the fuel system.
I would say to keep an eye on the car and see if it happens again. If it don't, then I would chalk it up to bad luck and continue driving. If it happens again, then further investigating will be needed.
