Default Grinding noise from transmission

I have a grinding noise from transmission suddenly appeared.

It is only when in gear and the clutch is engaged and not accelerating. When accelerating the noise goes away but when coasting in gear it is loud.

This link suggests throw-out bearing for clutch

Any advice welcome.

It could be the thrust bearing, aka "throwout" bearing. On most cars, it is not an expensive part, but requires removing the transmission to get at it.

Well it is a problem inside the gearbox/differential (which is a single unit on the 2.1 FWD) could be repairable but the prestige garage wants $3000 just to remove and then refit the gearbox (requires removing the engine first apparently). That does not include sending the gearbox to the gearbox guy who will open it up and then decide if he can fix it or not.

If he can't fix it then I am up for a replacement. Retail price I am told is $13,000

I have sourced a second hand one at $2700 but even then I am up for $6,000.

The gearbox guy has not worked on a Jag box before. He says he is not sure if it will even be possible to buy internal parts for the gearbox/differential since it may only come as a complete unit.

I also spoke to Jag dealer and they said that if a car comes in with a bad gearbox they just take out the gearbox, replace it ($17,000 + labour), send the gearbox to the UK where it is then reconditioned and sent to another jaguar dealer as parts stock.

Anybody know if it is possible to buy internal parts for the combined gearbox/diff unit on the 2.1 front wheel drive?

I am guessing it would be a case of ordering international from the UK.

$17,000 + labor? Sell the car for parts and buy a low mileage 2007 or 2008 X-Type.

Kind of depends where you live, there are rebuild kits available I think, 17K is way overboard unless you live on a desert island. The local shop here said a complete rebuild of everything would be 9K or something. But sounds to me it's the throw out bearing. Its the thing on the clutch fork the spins in time with the motor when you engage the clutch
