Default headlights.

I purchased a used 2002 Jaguar x type 3.0. When I looked at it during day headlights came on. But during the day you can't really tell intensity etc.

I noticed at night my headlights don't work as I thought. When I turn on headlights all 4 headlights come on. When I click for high beams it does not get brighter. The high beam indicator on the dash does come on / off.

After this I installed all new (x 4) silver - something or other (the expensive h1 bulbs). Thinking maybe they where double filament and all high beam filaments where burned out. Then I got them and realised they are single filament. But since I had them I installed anyway rather than return.

Question. How do high/ low beams work. Is low beam only 2 of 4 headlights and high beam all 4. Or is high/ low always all 4 and it just changes intensity?

Where should I begin to diagnose why high/low beams don't work. Again all 4 lights come on just won't change intensity when I hit switch. But the indicator on dash works.

when I search I found lots of headlight info. But not my exact problem. Possible not using right search terms or just did not open enough threads.

Just a caution on using Sylvania Silverstar bulbs, they tend to melt the harness and sometimes the housing =

OK thank you so much. I appreciate the info. Will check out later this evening. I live in FL. And its 90f out right now.

As far as the silver stars melting stuff. Has anyone had experience with LEDs?

I have already retrofitted all tail lights to LEDs. However that was because I blacked them out and needed something brighter.

I have done led headlights on my pickup truck and work van with no issues.

However things on this car seem temperamental.

I have read some posts on LED for the headlights. The largest consensus being because they are a different lighting type, that people tend to not like them much. Something as Thermo here describing as the light does not reflect back to the driver like we're used to. I know I have HID conversion on low & high and it took some getting used to driving in areas with no light source except the car. It sort of felt like I couldn't see things well. They actually put out more light and a little wider pattern, it's just the color difference for me I guess (mine are 6,000k).

If you are interested in conversion, Thermo has many posts here in the forum (& can be advanced searched by his name) on how/why/what/where to do this.

I actually have the Osram 64150nbp ones in mine. They have a little different bulb coloring than the ones above. Notice the pic above, blue tip and a little blue around the bulb base as well.

Got to thinking of this a bit more and found my receipt, they were Osram 64150 NBU not p. Just difference in generation I think. P is/was "plus" and U is "Unlimited".
