Headlights - RESOLVED

Hi everyone,
I have a2006 X Type and I love the car. the issue is the headlights. First I saw a light on the dash that led me to change the marker light bulbs. Did that, they all work but the light on the dash stays on, now my headlights don't work, sort of.
First no lights, then one light, next time I start the car the other side works but not the other. Sometimes they both work some times one side or no sides.
Changed fuses and when I did one side worked then the other. No consistency. One, the other or both, working or not working. Has a mind of it's own.
Do I need a dealer to straighten this out. High beams work fine as do the fogs. When the lights do work they don't dip when it starts up. They did when I got it.
Hope this is enough info, any suggestions would be a big help.
Thanks, Scott

sounds like the body module is hunting for a ground. try disconnecting the negative battery cable for 10 mins. see if anything changes. Could also be low battery voltage, take a reading when the neg. post is off, should read no less than 13.8. If it does leave the meter on for 10 mins. and see if it drops. Even if the alternator is putting out 14.5 and the battery is shorting internally and dropping the voltage momentarily to under 12 volts it will drive the body module crazy and you too chasing your tail to find a bad component that isn't there. Have the battery load tested at a parts store free just to eliminate that first. If it's the original battery (06), seven years in Canada is like 10 in lets say a milder climate.

Thank you for the reply, I tried the battery terminal disconnect, cleaned it and also found a wire off the rear of the battery box and reconnected it. No change. It looks like an original battery ( no date of installation marking) so I will try that next. Thanks again, I'll let you know. Maxx

I believe there was some discussion here a while ago about corrosion on the end of the negative cable where it anchors to the frame. It seemed that replacing that cable made a significant difference when random electrical problems were happening.

You have a 2006 and you think it is the original battery? That would make it at least 7 years old.....and in Canada no less. Before you do anything else get a new battery and see what you have. Cheap insurance in the big scheme of things and might even save you a headache some morning when it won't start. Consider yourself lucky it lasted that long as you are probably on borrowed time anyway. When mine went there was no warning whatsoever. One day started well, next morning, nothing. Our cars are known to throw a variety of weird codes when the battery is low.

I'll chime in with the rest. Battery, battery, battery,corroded/broken cable.
If you have a corroded connection anywhere your alternator CAN'T charge the battery, it's like having a 2amp charger trying to keep your battery charged and drawing 50 amps off from it. AND if current can't get IN to charge it won't go OUT when you hit the key.If seen this time and time again

Hi and thanks to all trying to help, I took the ground wire off and cleaned both ends and cleaned up were it mounts to the car frame. Car starts but, headlights still have a mind of their own, one, the other, both or none. Every time I start the car a new look. Also now the front windows go down with one touch but wont go up without holding the button. I am getting the battery tested and from the sounds of it that will be the culprit. I will let you know a soon as I know. Scott

Hi All, I was supposed to post in the Canadian section but can't find it. I had headlight issues, would work, wouldn't work, one would, then the other. One suggestion was a bad battery. Yes that was the culprit. Only 350 cranking amps when tested. Put in the new battery , it took a couple days but all issues corrected themselves and everything is good now. Thanks for the help from all who posted tips. It was like having a mechanic in the house. I still can't figure out how to set up my pages correctly, so I'll leave them as is but come back the next time I have car issues . Still love the car, thanks again, Maxx
