Default help! loose cable

I'm working on a 2004 xtype that I just acquired. I was doing a deep tune up when I noticed this loose broken cable. Can anyone help me figure this out? I've looked everywhere

I'm tempted to say it's the battery tender, in which case don't worry about it. But the connector looks a little different from mine.

Unfortunately I don't think that's it. Can anyone else chime in?

jcamayd, by chance is the car a manual transmission car? If so, give your back up lights a check to see if they work. I am betting that they won't. That would appear to be the wiring to the tranny for the reverse switch. It gets mounted to the top of the tranny I believe.

If that is not it, can you tell me the build month/year (listed in the driver's door jam, bottom of the sticker as I recall). There are 2 different wiring harnesses for in 2004 and I am trying to make sure that I look at the correct one.

I don't have the car next to me right now to get the exact build month, but I know its a late 2004 model. Its an automatic.

Well the cable/connector can only stretch so far...

I'm with Thermo in that it maybe for a manual transmission for the back-up lights, as most these cars use a common wiring harness and some things aren't connected on one particular version and are in the other versions...So it may not have been ever used....From what I can see in the photo, the pins look like they never were plugged into anything

Wow, the mystery deepens.

Reminds me of a story I read of an engineer who bought a tesla. He discovered a mystery USB jack in the car so he plugged his computer in and tried scanning it.

A little while later he got an email from Tesla headquarters telling him not to mess around with his own car.

I suppose it was Ethernet, not USB.

Also, scroll down in the comments for the infamous dragon gif. You have been warned.

Hmm...

It involves a mysterious rear port on a car.

Were I to post it here, I might be kicked off the forum.

It is in the comments, but if you don't see it, Google "dragon VW gif" and click on one of the images to see it in its full animated glory.

Perhaps that was the genesis of the JATCO box that we are cursed with in addition to some VW owners.....

I'm still wondering what that connector is.

(Edit: that gif belongs in that catastrophic converter thread that is getting out of hand. The magical dragon additive that fixes cats in heat. Even better than seafoam or Cataclean.)
