HELP! San Diego area Jag Shop?
I purchased a 2008 X-Type 3.0/AT yesterday and I think may have serious engine problems. The car has 90K miles and over-all appears to be in good shape.
During the test-drive I noticed a bit of a "growl" from the engine on hard acceleration and chalked it up to induction noise as this was my first time in "3.0" Jag.
The "fun" began about 30-min after handing over the cash and heading towards the freeway for the 45-min drive home. I started hearing a very slight "knocking" sound from the engine on regular acceleration and deceleration traffic-light-traffic light, my first thought was it sounded like a connecting "rod knock" (I "know" what that sounds like from first hand experience with a BMW 323i many years ago). The Jag's "knock" sounded more "fluttery" and was also present on deceleration, I thought that the sounds/symptoms were more like loose flex-plate to transmission torque converter bolts (Easy DIY fix). Got the car home, pulled it into the garage, and hit the web to see (while praying) if that was a common ailment for the Jag 3.0.
Up bright and early this morning to do a oil and filter change (5W-30) and to check the torque converter bolts. The TC bolts were tight , and upon start-up after the oil change the knock was still present even at idle in park. Decided to drive it 3-4 miles to AAA to handle the registration, by the time I got to AAA the knock had become very pronounced and now the engine had a high-pitched scrapping/'screeching" sound, I fully expected the engine to start shedding internal components.
Though I've already sourced a used engine for $1300.00 installed w/ a 90-day warranty from a local auto dismantler and I'm fully prepared to pay it, I would like a second opinion from a reputable shop that's familiar 3.0 X-Types.
The accessories, their belts, and idler pulleys all seem to be fine, and the starter motor appears to ok too.
Any suggestions/recommendations for a shop that will actually diagnose and knows the AJ-V6?
Thanks in Advance,
Chad

It'd be worth a call to Jaguar Coventry Cars of San Diego. They're located between La Jolla and Kearny Mesa.
