High beams don't work and reversing light issue!
Hi all, looking for help on a couple of issues remaing for me to fix on my new 2001 X-Type.
Ok here goes , the high beam on my X-type does not work properly, the problem was first noticed when i picked the car up and i drove to the petrol station to fill up and check the bulbs before heading home with my new pride and joy.
So there i am with my wife following in her car, we head into the petrol station and procede to check all bulbs and tyre pressures before driving home with the new jag, it is getting late about 21:00 so i need to make sure all lights and bulbs are ok as i will need them for the drive home. First issue i notice is that the front fogs do not come on, then i realise that the high beam will not work either but then suddenly the high beam comes on but will not go out again. i switch off all the lights and turn on the dip beam but the high beam comes on also?? front fog lights will just not work at all. the high beam will now come on all the time when dip beam is selected??
Thinking it's just something i am doing wrong and i don't know how to work the car properly we head back to the previous owners house but he is none the wiser either and says he has not used the car at night for over 4 months so did not realise there was an issue. While there we retry the dip beam and the high beam is now not on when we switch the dip beam on, but after 30 seconds the high beam comes on of it's own acord and again will not got out???.
I get the car home and start reading up on these forums what possible things could be wrong. I order a new High beam column swith of ebay for £15 (still to arrive) i now swap over the R15 (fogs and high beam relay) and the R3 relay (horn) from the engine bay and the passenger footwell to see if it is a faulty relay but no the problem is not the relay as the horn works with the relay from the passenger foot well which is the same relay part number. I then check out the fuses for the High beam and front fog lights.
Turns out the fuse for the fogs is missing altogether??? So i replace the fuse and the front fogs now work Yippee. But i still do not have any high beams! The high beam warning light comes on and you can hear a relay click when you pull back the high beam column switch which feels ok as though it is working ok, but no high beam comes on. Now remember the initial problem was that the High beams did eventually come on and would not go out, now they just won't come on at all. Hopefully it is the column switch to blame if so i should recieve my new one tomorrow, but if anyone knows exactly what the issue is please let me know.
Now for the second remaining problem! My reversing lights wont come on unless i physically pull the manual gear shift all the way back into the reverse gear gate as far as it will go! The car will go into reverse gear no problem and does not slip out of gear but the reversing or backup light as the Americans like to call them won't come on unless i put the gear selector fully back as far as it will go into the reversing gate. I have no idea where the reversing light switch is and if this is a problem with it, or if it is a problem with the gear selector not activating the switch as it needs adjusting or not. Doe anyone have any ideas.
Thanks in advance for all advice and help.

Well got no replies but thought i'd keep you all updated anyway!
Turns out there has been some rewiring jiggery pokery going on at the main beam headlights! There is a wire running from the Near Side main beam to the Offside Main beam suppying power to the Offside light. So looks like there is a break in the wire supplying the power to the Offside light and someone has done a jury rig to get it going again but the wire came out causing all the issues with the main beam so got that sorted and all good there now.
Spent most of Sunday with a bottle of paint restorer and cloths bringing the Metallic Black paint back to almost showroom condition (just the deeper scratches left and you can't see them unless you got your nose on the paint work). Then gave it 2 coats of professional wax.
Spent Wednesday bringing the bumper and door trim/seals back to black and getting the leather restorer into those lovely ox blood red leather seats.
I put 4 spanking new Michelin Primacy HP 225/45/17 94W's on Monday which made a world of difference to the cars ride comfort! Previous owner had Bridgestone Runflats on her!!! Only supposed to be for BMW's them and they are the worst idea ever, the amount of cacked rims i see from BMW's with runfalts on is ridiculous. I tracked the car up today she had a bit of toe in +6Deg so i sorted that out.
Got some LED sidelights coming as present Sidelights are hardly visible as being on even at night, along with some Philips X-treme Vision H1 +100% distance bulbs. Does anyone know how to manually adjust the headlight beam alignment as my Nearside dip beam looks like it's way to high compared with the Offside.
Just need 2 new windscreen washer nozzles as the present ones are leaking at the pipe connection as it looks like they have been partly broken and they are not getting full power spray to the windscreen. Anyone know where to get a set without going to Jaguar? Tried Ebay but not found any Jag ones there.
All in all i have still got a smile from ear to ear when i sit in my X-type and i have got nearly all the little problems it came with fixed now, my right shoulder is still sore from all the wax on wax offing on Sunday but the effort was worth the end result car looks A1 but i will be washing it again this weekend and adding another layer of wax.

Nemesis, your backup light issue sounds like a bad switch on your manual tranny. I say replace that switch and see what you have at that point. I think you will find that the reverse lights will work great then.
With the LEDs, just make sure you get them orientated correctly. If you plug them in backwards, they will not come on at all.
As for your one DIP beam, what I want you to do is to open up the hood and touch the back of the DIP beam as you watch the front of the headlight. do you see a lot of the internals moving around and you find that the back of the headlight seems to move rather easily? If so, you have a common problem with the X-Types in that the supports for the headlight are broken and now the lenses are floating around inside the headlight assembly. The fix is to either buy some new posts and put them in or to pull out some epoxy and glue it back together. Either way, I would recommend removing the headlight assembly from the car so you can see inside and fix what is wrong.

As you're in England, ebay is pot luck for spares but there's several specialist breakers in the UK likely to have screenwash parts available. Try Eurojag. JoJags or JustJagsUK.

Ok so here's an update. Looks like my dip beam alignment is ok! Had a couple of mates looka t it and they both say the alignment looks ok as it is the left hand beam should be slightly higher as it is the pavement/sidewalk side of the car and i have a manual adjuster and both headlights change by the same amount. I will be putting it in a garage next week to get a wuick check done just to make sure.
Reversing lights now working all ok, sticky switch now sorted.
New problem , I knew there was an issue of some kind with the Auxilliary drive belt or serpentine belt as you Americans call it, as i could here a noise coming from that area of the engine. Thought it was either going to need a new belt or water pump bearing was going, on closer examination the Power Steering pump pully has a wobble to it's pulley wheel, quite severe looking was unable to tighten the pulley wheel so it looks like i'll just go ahead and change the entire Power steering pump and do the belt at the same time. Any tips on making this an easier job? Doesn't look to difficult just a bit tight for space, but i've seen worse.
Had the ABS light come on and go off the other day so looks like i might need to replace a sensor some time in the near future as well.
Still loving the Jag though, I get a smile on my face just walking up to it never mind driving it, and even with these little niggles i am going to get it all fixed and fully serviced as it's probably going to be the best car i'll have for a while. So it's going to get well looked after.

Hi guys, another update on my X-type issues.
Headlight adjusters were broken, every single one of them! bought a repair kit for both headlights and now sorted.
ABS light issue is down to a bit of dodgy wiring on the the right rear ABS sensor, someone in the past has just twisted the broken cable together and put tape around it and done a bad job of it as well. Bought a new rear ABS sensor and i am fitting it tomorrow.
Getting a slight knock from the front end, sounds like lower arm bush or anti roll bar droplink bushes are gone so have bout new lower arms, droplinks and track rod ends for both sides and will be fitting these tomorrow.
Will give the car a minor service oil, filters and spark plugs this week sometime as well and also change out the gearbox oil as the gearchange is abismally stiff getting.
Will then put it through a prelim MOT and if it passes wil just MOT it and that's that .
Things i will be doing in the near future will be adding parking sensors front and back and upgrading the all the main headlights to HID's as well as renewing all brake discs and pads. She should be good and solid for antoher few years then i just need to keep her polished and clean to stop and rust appearing, i will probably paint some areas of the underside with anti rust paint to help keep it at bay although she doesn't have any yet so i want to keep it that way.
Need to get a new Sat Nav Disc my 2005>2006 one is a bit dated and even in my town there are loads of new main roads that are not on the system. Any ideas where i can get a new disc reasonably cheap?
It's been 4 months now since i got it and i am still loving it, got it's niggles but i am fixing everything on it and it will be 100% solid by the time i am finished with it.
Thanks for all help from you guys regarding all my niggles over the past months.
