I have a 2005 x type, 3.0, 70,000 miles, had a high pitch whining noise during accel and decel between 30-40 mph, changed xmsn fluid ( added more than drained so it wasnt serviced properly), runs great now.

My 2005 just started doing that, sometimes only really low high pitch noise just like yours 30-40 mph, before It started doing that I took it to the dealer for an oil change and they did the 32 point inspection on it and they said all was good, wonder if i should get them to drain the xmsn, TC and diff.

Master Deep-- Take the advice of the Master Jag tech it's a common problem with X Types. Look back to previous threads and follow "How to grease the center drive shaft support bearing" before you throw $ at a diff. You might be pleasantly surprised.Cold weather, between 20/35 MPH, goes away at higher speed, sounds like diff support bearing to me.Mine does it too.

greetings...! also been going crazy with the famous humming. i ordered a used rear drive shaft. it was bad. so i put the old one in, but, chaged the front bearing-like small hub. it made the rattling go away into a smooth humming only after 35mph or 4th gear, so it seems.
pls help me any how you can. does it just need lube? or new bearings? dont know what they are even called. or is it the transfer case?
well many thanks

Petermase: When you removed and reinstalled the drive shaft you probably moved some grease around and tweeked the bearing a bit, if it got better then comes back you found the problem. And it will come back just a matter of time, bad bearing are just like a bad back, they let you know when they aren't perfect.

Had a week or more of single digit temps here on the Jersey Shore. The infamous whistle/squeal started the first time I took my '07 xtype out in the snow. I think it was shortly after I felt the AWD activate that the noise started. At 20 mph it will start as a low whistle and by 30 mph it's pretty load. Over 30 mph it disappears. If I excelerate a little heavy to 40 mph I don't get the noise. Coasting to a stop the noise starts at 30 mph and stops at 20 mph. I wouldn't worry except I'm heading south for a long road trip ending in Florida and I'd hate to get stuck on the road. The forum suggests it's transfer case or prop. shaft bearing. Anyone have a definite solution? Been out of warranty for a year. Jack

I had the hum from 28 to 32 mph when cold. If I blew past this speed, you don't hear it. It also would go away when driven for a while or temp warmed. I put the warm grease in the prop shaft bearing and it went away after a few drives and hasn't come back in a year.
Of course, it's always good to change the transfer case oil.
