I don't know what you're referring to as the "fill plug" in your picture, but I have circled it in yellow for you. If you are referring to anything other than what I circled then you have removed the wrong thing, which is probably why you think it's made of metal.

Also, see my older post in the link I posted above, it has very detailed pictures and was easily accessible through the "stickied" FAQ links.

Gold, I definitely filled the wrong port. However like said earlier i lost about 3-4 quarts in the driveway and the transmission wouldnt engage. I poured the ATF in the spot to the left of the text box that shows what i thought to be the "Transmission fill" and once i got my Jag to temp i cycled through all the gears closed it back up and the car operates perfectly fine. I was definitely a little hesitant at first because i wasn't sure if that was where the tranny fluid went. I was able to my finger in the hole and saw that it was definitely tranny fluid in there so i went for it. Like i said the car operates properly now so do you think i will have problems in the future. I definitely won't reference that picture anymore since im off. But hopefully your new pic will help others.

I think you will be fine if it's working now. The big concern is that there are certain bolts that can cause internal tranny issues if removed. I know there is one on the side that will cause an immediate loss of reverse gear if removed, and requires a complete transmission disassembly to put it right.

I have 126,000 miles on my X-Type, I don't believe my fluid was ever changed. Do I change it now? I have been told by some mechanics that it may cause more problems by kicking up dirt/particles and clogging the tubes. Not sure what to do, want new fluid but don't want a nightmare.

Jim,
I followed the steps of the above post and drained 4 quarts of transmission fluid and replaced 4 quarts. The problem is that I am now getting a "GEARBOX FAULT" and the car will not start and will not come out of gear.

If you have any answer or suggestions please help!

I followed the steps above. I first drained out 4 quarts and put 4 quarts back in and now am getting a gearbox fault. The car will not start and will not move out of gear. It was fine prior to draining and refilling the transmission fluid. Any ideas would be great!

Thanks,
Rob
