Just to be clear, there are "safety" RECALLS, non-safety RECALLS, and everything else that falls short of an official RECALL that literally, would be referred to as just a "recall".

Safety RECALLS operate under federal law, and generally are required to be held open for 10 years. After 10 years you are out of luck.

Non-safety RECALLS "close" after a shorter period of time (usually around 4 or 5 years...max)

The TSBs DO include "RECALL"s proper, and here is an example of an official "RECALL" that applies to some 2002 Jaguar X-Types (which is what I also have):
http://www.bluejag.co.uk/Jaguar-XT-T...XT413-R935.pdf

You can clearly note the watermarked RECALL wording on the TSB and the title.

So for example, if your particular transmission (based on the serial number located straight down below left of the brake fluid was one of the TSB) yes, your transmission may have be "recall"ed (lower case) but that "recall" has long since closed.

Even if you call/complain/threaten Jaguar at the national level, they will tell you the same thing. No need to take my word for it, feel free to call... but that is what they will tell you.

The bottom line: the dealership won't do anything unless they are going to get reimbursed from the national manufacturer, and after the recall (or even an official RECALL) is over, they won't do anything either.

Stinks! But there it is.

You know guys, I'm really disappointed in Jaguar. The A pillar rust issues, the issues with the cooling fans, the transmission issues. It seems that a child could have designed a better car. No, really what I'm pissed at is the fact they don't stand behind their product. The transmission I understand, the other two I don't. Anyhow, I think this will be the last "Jag" for me.

I am sorry about your problems. I will be the first to admit that out of 3 Jaguars my X is the most problematic....

....however, you can not expect a car company to stand behind a 14 year old car. That is something you can expect only if you took the hit and where the first owner.... If you sold a product would you be able to be liable for it 14 years after the fact and multiple owners? I don't think anyone could.

I am not trying to be ugly and totally agree the car is flawed in many ways, but when you buy a used car (specially over a decade old) the risk is understood. Specially a old Jaguar.

I don't think you've cleared up anything at all !

You're assertions seem very broad and arbitrary. Are you referring to Jaguar only? Or other makes as well?

Some recalls are manufacturer initiated, others mandated by NHTSA (or similar gov't entity), some expire, some are lifetime. In my experience, safety-related recalls are generally lifetime. To say 'you are out of luck' after 10 years on a safety recall isn't true, at least not as broadly as you say. In fact, many times over my career manufacturers would have a big 'push' to get recalls completed on 10-15 year old cars. Completion rates are carefully monitored. If below requirements the manufacturer is pressured to actively get the cars in to dealers to have the work done.

One type of recall that will often have an expiration date is for emissions equipment. Without getting into excrutiating detail emission equipment typically has a much longer warranty than the rest of the car. A known faulty part may be subject to recall because the failure will mean the car won't meet EPA standards. This brings big heat for the manufacturer, so the cars are recalled to have the problem fixed....right up to the point where the emissions warranty expires and they manufacturer is off the hook.

.

The bottom line: the dealership won't do anything unless they are going to get reimbursed from the national manufacturer,

That much we can agree on !

Cheers
DD

What do you expect them to do? All cars have faults sooner or later and the guarantees only last for so many years..................

Again, I totally understand the transmission; transmissions fail, that's no biggie. The rust issue though, come on Jaguar! They were trying to save a few bucks and used something that was known to rust, then they put a crappy rust inhibitor on it. That's why I think they should just fix the dang thing. Also, the fan relay... really jaguar? You can't make a fan relay that lasts? Ugh. I love this car, totally am in love with it. But, it has some crappy engineering.
