How much before the TC will break?
Hi all. I'm new to the site. I don't have an x-type yet, really in the researching stage to see if I want to go newer x-type (06 or 07 x-type, hopefully with sport package) or older Porsche 996 (I know they're night and day). I'm used to performance cars (68 and 70 Mustangs with built V8's, modded Porsche 944, modded 06 Mustang GT) but I go to law school in Miami and needless to say, performance is wasted in traffic there.
I have done the searches and I know the x-types are weak in the transfer cases. What I did not see was anything that mentioned how far they could be taken. I see that Borla and Arden offer exhaust for these cars and I know K&N offers a filter and that it seems like a fair amount of you are running e3 or equivalent premium spark plugs. I would estimate that adds about 10-13 hp (please correct me if I am off on that number). If I were to purchase a Jag as my daily driver, do those three performance upgrades, am I risking having a destroyed transfer case? I am not looking to get hp crazy with this car, but I do unfortunately love to tinker with my cars so I know this is inevitable if I purchase one. I just want to make sure that when the upgrade bug bites me, I don't end up destroying my Jag. This is my first foray into AWD so please forgive my ignorance. Thanks!

princeton, as for the transfer case lasting under high load, it is more how many times you do it not so much how much power you are putting through it. But, with that being said, you apply enough power and it will break too. I think you would be safe installing the new exhaust and intake as long as you reserve the hard accelerations for special times. What our transfer cases suffer from it appears is cyclic stress, resulting in the case of the transfer case cracking. What happens is as you apply power, the case flexes. Under numerous flexings, the case will finally fail, resulting in tons of movement in the case, leading to mechanical failure. So, if you can figure out a way to stiffen up the case, you will be good to go. Reports are the gears will handle the power, it is the case that can't.
As for the X-type over the 996, that is more a question of what you are after. I think you will find that if you are going to try and impress clients, the X-type is going to do better. But, ultimately, you need to be happy with the car you buy.

Thank you for the info, I did not realize it was the stress from cycles that was causing the issue, I assumed it was from throwing too much power through it. Again though, I am an AWD newbie so there is definitely a learning curve associated.
At this point I'm not really going for impressing clients, more so for something that will lower my insurance costs, save me on fuel, and an automatic for Miami traffic isn't a bad thing either. Thanks for the info thermo!

One further thought: the transfer case is stressed because of the amount of traction you have. It is impossible to break the four wide sticky tires loose in a fairly heavy car on dry pavement so 100% of the torque of the engine multiplied by the transmission gearing is put through the transfer case.
Take any of the cars you mentioned you had, put on a set of drag racing slicks wide enough that you couldn't break them loose, and start launching the car hard and you'll break something.
The X-Type is not a drag car. That being said, change your TC fluid regularly and treat it reasonably and it will last a very long time.

Why's that? The constant rains in the summer that cause the oil to seep up out of the pavement and makes the roads very slick not worthwhile for having AWD?
I appreciate all the input on this guys. I'm not looking for a drag car (my 600+ hp 70 Mustang Mach I more than takes over for that). As far as the mileage goes I've heard varying accounts that some people get really good and others get crappy. Bottom line is anything in the city over 9-11 mpg which is what I currently get is a great improvement.

Welcome and hopefully you find an X to your liking. A manual would be great, but I understand why you would want an Auto in the city.
The mods you intend to make, as others have indicated, will not directly impact the lifespan of the case or any other major components. Really, you will probably not pick up much in the way of hp either, although the Borla kit has a nice sound. With a 600hp 'stang in the garage, it sounds like you don't need to worry much about hp for your DD. The X is very civilized, has a timeless design, handles well, grips like glue, has enough power to assert yourself in traffic when needed, and returns reasonable fuel economy. And not every other guy has one, like the 325's that grow on trees around here. They are no less reliable than any other car on the road when properly cared for, and you can get one pretty cheap.
