I'm sure others may have better answers to this, but, usually engines have serial numbers which are linked to the vehicles they belong too...........obviously you could ask for records for that vehicle although, no guarantees there I guess.
With regard to them fitting a 2.5 litre........I'm sure you would notice the performance difference, failing that, a rolling road test to establish the bhp would suffice I guess.

Like Jim said.
Each engine has a serial code. Ask you dealer to give you your engine's code and them match it up to the engine.
The car would not run (or run extremely rough) if the swapped the smaller displacement unit.
Elaborate more on "secretive".

What they said is correct. Ever see a muscle car go for big money because "all numbers match"?
It's still the case. Take it to a mechanic you actually trust and have him find the # for you. Then run it. Probably can go right to Jag for that.

RE: How will i know if they switched my engine?
well here goes i bought this car from a dealer who sort of specializes in used high end cars....the finance manager was one of my best friends in high school....so i got what i thought was a pretty good deal i paid 16200 for the car.....i however didnt buy the warrenty(i know it was stupid)...but my friend was like ohh well this car only has 39k i wouldnt buy it either....so i think it was about a month and a half after i had the car this happened...only comes with 30day warrenty....so they take the car and tell me we will work something out....the mechanic is handling this case but he doesnt do major repairs....i agree to pay $1000 and they said they would pick up the rest....the catch is they wont tell me who and where the car is or being repaired by....they tell me they dont want me down there causing problems...so the car has been gone 6 weeks...i was just told last week of the "major damage" for the longest time they thought it was a timing chain tensioner....duh i could have told them that after they told me there was next to no oil in the car...so i feel like i cant make a big deal about it or they will tell me to shove it and give me back the car unrepaired....the reason it is taking so long according to the dealer mechanic is they are not paying this guy full price so its not high on his priority list.....last week they told me they ordered all the parts to fix it.....i would raise a little hell but they got me by the proverbial *****......

Damn bonelee, it appears that they stuck it up your *** without the decency of using grease. I know what you mean about wanting to scream at the top of your lungs but not being able to because they can simply tell you to screw yourself. Any chance that if they take too long you could take some legal ramification?

Numbers matching on Jags isn't that important. I would be impressed if the dealer could tell you what engine number your car has. However, bad service is just that. I would not waste time calling, they won't care. I would go down in person and ask to see a manager in the middle of the show room. Threats of lawyers won't scare these people, but making them show their a$$ in front of potential customers may get some action out of them. Just a thought.....

Hey there welcome and sorry to hear your problems...bonelee...First off some questions...what was the year 2.5/3.0 auto stick and when was the car made or rather inserviced...i didn't notice you post the year of your ride in your posts but if that car only has 39k miles and it was purchased and titled on or after 6-4-03 the car may still be covered under factory warranty...another question is whether you got a carfax on the car? I'd try taking this to a lawyer and seeing what they do say...or as you stated the bbb at least! 6 weeks is a joke actually excess of a week for a car that was just purchased is a joke!
What is that you pick up a 1000 and well get the rest crap about??? Man hopefully you get this all straightened out...

04X, I'm not sure who has it worse. Bonelee has to worry about getting a good engine, but you have to worry about having a good looking body afterwards. So he gets a pretty, yet possible unreliable car. You get a realiable, yet possible ugly car. You know how bad shop repairs can go. From paint mismatching to uneven surfaces. Good luck to both of you!
