I tried "THE AIRBOX MOD"!
I've seen an older post on here about the airbox mod that someone had done on their X-type. It received mixed reviews whether or not it would work. I had my airbox cover off the other week when changing my spark plugs (What a b**ch that job is!) so I decided to give it a go. Only took ten minutes, I just snapped the "blades" off with pliers then got a household sander and quickly sanded it smooth. I have a K&N panel filter that never really made any noise. Now, you hear it coming. Very deep gargly growl and somehow sounds slightly like a turbo in mid revs. If you're looking for more noise or better breathing for your car, this is a simple and great mod! Just thought I'd give my review on it for anyone who has thought about this in the past! (Sorry for the essay! LOL)

It is simple. If you don't have a sander use a metal file. I even used a utility knife to trim many of them flat. A dremel tool is handy as well.
I didn't add the extra intake hose as was in the original mod design, I didn't think it would really do much, the twin intakes seem positioned well enough.
I also have the drop in K&N. A slightly more noticeable (appealing) noise. No peformance gain that I could feel by the seat of my pants.

Hmm, i have a interesting problem with this mod, not really a problem just interesting thing about my airbox. So i tried the mod this moring, and it looks as though my car dosen't even have a baffle, its baffled me ( sorry for the pun, but i had too) there are no sanding marks or any signs that it has been modified. So, i just put everything back together and checked for any warning lights. Any ideas about this missing baffle. My cars a 2002, 2.5l non-sport, my theory is that they didn't think the 2.5l would cause nay niose during its operation so they just didn't put one in, and when someone complained or something they started adding them in, it would explain why its a plate and now actauly part of the airbox. Sorry for the fairy tale long essay.

Really easy to do. All I did was snap the "blades/Fins" off with a pair of pliers or wire cutters then used a hand held sander to flatten it off. I hosed it down and wiped with a towel and just checked to make sure there weren't any little bits but the sander did a good job. Nice and simple and quite noisy with the K&N filter too. Didn't bother trimming the inside of the outlet pipe that leads to the throttle body, there's no need. Also, I didnt bother putting a new air intake pipe in but, if you remove the screws from inside the box that hold the two front intakes in, it will slide down a little and give a better intake from the front of the box. Hope everyone is happy with the result they get. Now, what to try next! LOL
