well, $1,600 for the used transfer case comes with 90 day warranty. thats not much of a warranty. I wish I could trade this car in but I'm afraid nobody will buy it if you can't even put it in drive. Unfortunately, it looks like I will sell it once its fixed. I am tired of worrying about the transmission, transfer case, torque convertor. I just replaced the fuel pump for $800 bucks too. Its a shame too since I really like this car.

^ Why in the hell would you buy a used transfer case for $1600? Trust me you look around long enough, you'll find one for less than $500. When I was looking for one, I found a few for that price, give or take $100.
And if you're gonna trade it in, I'd just get a working transfer case in there and take it str8 to the dealer washed and cleaned up to get maximum value out of it.
You can get a transfer case and install done for less than $1200. Whether you keep the car after that is all up to you.

2001-2003 have the viscous coupling. All others do not. Most say that the 2004+ do not feel like a rear drive car, while the 2001-2003 models feel more like a rear drive car. I haven't driven a newer one, so can't really speak for that.
Other than that, I'm almost certain that they're all interchangeable. Engine size doesn't matter.

last question, I guess it doesn't matter if this is an automatic or manual transmission when I am buying a used transfer case? I just want to make sure. thanks again, I am very stressed and pissed off right now and it doesn't help to see my jag in so many pieces.

Update: I got the car back after a hefty bill of $2,150 for a used transfer case. the car drives great, and thank god it wasn't the transmission. I lost confidence in my car and can't keep up with the repair bills. Unfortunately it looks like I will have to sell my car. I will probably look into buying another Jaguar in the future but this time it will include some kind of warranty!

I'd just like to say I'm quite impressed. You've had wayyyyy more problems than the average owner by far and yet you still want to come back! When you need help with the pick of the next car let us know! Post here in the x-type forum as well!
Glad you got the car fixed!
