That sensor is not your issue, nor will it cause your issue. Most likely, you have a leak in your system. Most common on X's is compressor, or the combo hose bolted to the compresor leaks under the undertray, or lower valance because that part of the "high side" of the pipe rubs against a little metal piece that's part of the lower valance. Look for a flourescent green dye along any of the a/c hoses, pipes, condensor, etc.
The reason you have different temps. side to side is that your car is equipped with an orifice tube, instead of an expansion valve. When the refrigerant passes through that tube and pressure is reduced it becomes very cold on one side of the evaporator and as it moves across the evaporator, being there is a low charge, the refrigerant quickly becomes saturated with heat from the cabin. Expansion valve systems are different in that when the charge is low, you'll have warm air in all the vents. At least that's been my experience with Jaguars. A/C systems act differently in different climates, so your mileage may vary.
Find the leak, repair it, and you'll be comfy again. Good luck.

BTW, that sensor you are describing is the aspirator/ or in-car temp sensor. The sensor assy uses a fan mounted in front of it attached to a little vent to the right of your steering column to draw in air from the cabin to give the a/c control module an idea of how to control it's task....whether to heat the cabin up or cool it down. I haven't seen one of these on an X cause an issue you described.

What noise? (EDIT: just read the other thread, we might be in the wrong thread)
If you are attempting to clean the little fan, some "dust-off" spray could be tried first without having to remove the fan. However that probably won't do it. Suggest removing the fan, cleaning it with the duster and a small boars hair brush or toothbrush - be delicate- then lube fan shaft with sewing machine oil.
