t24jer, unfortunately, there is no instantaneous MPG setting on the car. Not even a "you are getting about as good as you can" or "wow you are wasting gas" meter.
The nearest thing that you can do is to reset it as you are driving and then see how fast that it will rise on you. If you are doing a long drive (say over 30 KM for example), you can get up to speed and then reset and after about 10 KM or so, you should have a pretty accurate number as to what you are getting at that speed. But, if you start changing speed, going up and down a bunch of hills and whatnot, then your number is going to be scewed.

A couple names to look for are ELM327 (ODB-II reader via bluetooth) or a Scangauge/ autel maxitrip type of unit. Which also plugs into the OBD port however is a stand alone unit which you can mount in your car and which will read codes and clear them as well as has an interface to your computer like the ELM.
I have a Maxitrip (Chinese imitation) because I couldn't find a Scangauge (original product) locally. I'm fine with my imitation unit. I've cleared codes for my friends and it still reads live data and has a vehicle trip log for the last 20-30 trips I believe. Monitors air and coolant temps, it does alot that a larger more comprehensive unit will do so it's good to provide heads up anyways.
