Default Interesting AC Phenomena

Apologies for not being around much lately, I've been busy with work and life in general (Hi Dell! ),

So we relocated from San Antonio, TX to Las Vegas, NV a few weeks ago. Prior to leaving SA I gave our '08 a good going through (fluids, tire pressures, car wash, etc) for the 1200-mile or so trip in 100+ degree heat (Our '07 would be making the trip on a U-Haul Auto Transport trailer towed by a 26' U-Haul moving truck.

About a year ago I noticed that the '08 was exhibiting signs of FCM (Fan Control Module) failure (AC blowing warm at low road speeds and cooling back down at moderate speeds), Knowing that FCM controls the cooling fans (AC on or off) I didn't want to risk a cooling problem on the trip, so I exchanged the FCM from the '08 for the perfectly working unit from the '07 (In retrospect; I'm not sure if it made any difference).

We arrived in Las Vegas and the '08 performed flawlessly on the trip (The '07 has accumulated more mileage on a U-Haul trailer (California to Texas and Texas to Nevada) than being driven since I bought it almost 2-years ago).

'We arrived in Las Vegas and I pulled the '07 off the trailer and drove it a few miles to get a bath. When I turned on the AC it blew ambient (110 degree) air out the the vents at any road speed, I figured/knew that I would need to replace the (bad) FCM that I swapped from the '08. Interesting thing though; The '08' wasn't blowing very cool air either, and the RH (AC) fan wasn't switching to high-speed with the AC set at full cold. I checked the AC pressure line (low-side) and it was reading over-charged (Huh?). This made no sense. I evacuated the system, and attempted to refill it, after a few ounces of R134A it read over-charged again (WTH!). Time to start looking a plausible explanation for this.

Jaguar Technical Service Bulletin JTB00183 Issued on 07 JAN 2010.

I performed the TSB procedure and the (wifes) '08 is now blowing snowflakes out the vents! The cooling fans are working as they should, and she's a happy camper! The '07 is exhibiting the same symptoms as '08 and I'll be performing the TSB on it as well.

If you elect to DIY; You're going to need a couple of 12oz cans of R134A, a fill kit (I used and highly recommend one made by A/C Pro), a good pair of ramps or jack stands, a 10mm socket and/or box wrench, and a lot of paper towels or shop rags. The upper bolt for the cover plate is very close to the oil filter, and I found it easier to just R&I the oil filter (Hence the shop paper towels/rags. This TSB is amazingly easy to accomplish.

Happy Motoring,

Chad
