alphacat, that is always a possibility. But, as a general rule, the alternators in these cars are pretty robust and they don't tend to fail. You are much more likely to have a problem with say a bad battery or bad battery cables before the alternator goes out.
Keep in mind that the Jag doesn't have a voltage regulator like a lot of the older say Chevy's had. Our cars have a field circuit and a rectifier circuit in them. The rectifier circuit simply takes the AC voltage that the alternator makes and makes it a pulsating DC voltage. The field circuit simply takes the signal that comes from the ECU and amplifies it to create a current based signal to make the alternator output the correct voltage. The ECU is what actually looks at what the voltage is on the electrical system and then compares it to a reference voltage to see if it needs to raise or lower the voltage accordingly. The ECU then sends out a signal to the field circuit to make the voltage correct.

Hi guys,
I just had a problem with my car. I got a sign on the screen and checked with my mechanic and found out that the catalyst converter is bad and after i start d car the exhaust will be hot at the point connecting to the engine. Can I get a new catalyst converter and where can I get it? Also is there another catalyst converter that can fit into it? I cant drive the car anymore cos it may damage other things if I drive it.
Help needed!!!!!!
