Grodonfrs, anything is possible if you have enough money and time. Will it directly swap over, NO!!!!!! Your X-Type has a transverse mounted V6 and the 4.2L R motor is an inline motor. Your X-Type is AWD, the S-Type motor is a RWD setup. So, the first step would be to convert the X-Type over to 2WD (the parts are out there, so, that is pretty easy). But, from there, you will end up welding in new motor mounts, stripping the wiring harness from the car and then grafting in the S-Type harness to make it all work. Not sure how hard that may be.
From there, you should be able to just shoehorn in the motor. Granted, you may find that this will also take some more welding as you may have to reform the firewall and transmission hump to make it all fit.
You would probably have a better chance taking say the motor from a Subaru WRX and putting that into the car. The drivetrain after the transfer case will handle the increased power and the Subaru motor has been shown to get into the 400 hp range with little trouble.

I don't think that engine would even fit into the X-Type, be it mounted transverse or inline. Also, if you convert the X-Type to 2WD, you'll lose the most significant advantage the X-Type holds over the S-Type; AWD. Yeah, everything is possible if you have the money, but there's no sense whatsoever in trying to extensively modify a car to be something it is not instead of spending the money into a car that already is what you wish your current car was. Extensive modifications will also scrap the resale value.
All these "can I put the engine from a car into a completely different car" threads, seen on every car forum on the internet, should really be answered with just "No". It's clear that whoever asks such knows so little of the workings that a more detailed answer won't be making any difference. When I got this car, I played around with the idea of swapping in the 3.0 V6 X-Type engine as it seemed like a fairly sensible thing to do, but after reading a few threads on engine-swapping here, I realized it's a LOT of work to swap in even an identical engine and thus not worth it unless the old engine is broken and can't be repaired.
