Jaguar x-type rust

Hi, my son is looking at buying an x-type (2008). We've viewed a couple which seem OK, However, when checking the MOT there are a few advisories on the MOT, noting rust on the chassis and rear subframe, along with the rear suspension component. All these note the corrosion but state that it has not seriously weakened the structure.
Is this a common problem with x-types and is it something to be worried about, given the car is nearly 16 years old and you would expect some rust an hence remedial work.
If anybody has any experience in dealing with rust or other advice I would be grateful.
Thanks

Rust is a regular problem with X types.Often surface rust around the rear suspension and sub frame can be kept at bay with a wire brush and maybe a coat of lanoguard or waxoyl or similar.if the rust isn't too advanced ,which it probably won't be as you have only got advisories.
Sills on the other hand can be more of a problem as the rust "hides" behind the plastic covers making it harder to spot and more difficult to spray, although you can usually get at them .I noticed you hadn't mentioned an advisory on the sills so maybe the ones you have looked at have had them replaced.
I tend to spray a hose all underneath the body and wheel arches everytime I clean mine (which is too often according to Mrs blues boy",and run it up and down the joint of plastic cover and sill to force the muck out.
I noticed by you mentioning MOT's that you must be in the UK so obviously damp weather and winter salt spray is worth getting off asap.
Hope you find a good one soon as when they are right they are a pleasure to drive and a nice place to be.
