Default Way to improve gas milage?

The gas milage is dismal in this car... Anyone try changing the computer chip or adding a K&N air filter or something to improve it?

I can't see how 230 HP engine gets such crappy gas mileage. Maybe its the AWD system is not efficient.

I guess you don't really think of a Jaguar as being a fuel efficient car

Dismal? Compared to what? You have to keep in mind this car came out 12+ years ago and everything on it was designed with the technology available several years before that. So, if you compare it with today's cars with 230 HP, yeah, the mileage isn't that great. Compared to what was available when it first came out, it was comparable. It never was en economy car. Wish it got better gas mileage, but overall I am happy with it.

I got this one

compared to a 2004 4 runner with the V8... Exact same year the 4 runner is garbage 11-14mpg when I pull my 4500 lbs trailer, but it gets 22mpg on the highway, which is 1mpg better then the jag, albeit that is with 4x4 off not sure what it is in 4x4 mode but still. Maybe they need a way to disengage awd on these awd cars in sunny day scenarios when you don't really need it.

Its pretty bad man even for a 2004... My Nissan maxima which was 1996 was 27mpg when it was new, just before I sold it, it was getting about 22mpg that's with over 300,000km on the odometer...

I read the forums about this car not just on here but like Edmonds and some of the other car sites, I'm not the only one complaining about gas mileage a lot of people complained about tire wear and the gas mileage, I bet the 2 are related maybe I need to get the camber adjusted on the rear suspension

Just a point... my 2004 x-type 3.0 AWD fill up on hwy straight run to 1/4 tank registers 28+ MPG... (60,500 miles on it and still need to do the 60,000 tune up and maintainence) A/C on auto set at 69F me and 2 passengers... this is pretty consistant. Driving up Rt 17 NY state which is a mix of good grades and flat driving. All in all the milage is good for me and i can look the other way because im in a jag! :-) Always premium 93 octane when possible, some states dont go that high. Just my observation as everyone elses will be different.

ok no idea how your getting 28 this is what the car is rated at by epa and this was before epa changed to make their ratings more realistic this car is a 2004, epa forced automakers to use a more realistic system I think in 2008ish...

Engine3.0 L V 6-cylinder
DrivetrainAll Wheel Drive
Transmission5-speed Automatic
Horse Power227 hp @ 6800 rpm
  • Fuel Economy16/22 mpg
  • Bluetooth No
  • Navigation No
  • Heated Seats Yes
The 21mpg I'm seeing seems pretty spot on, and I live in WA state the terrain here is very hilly. I recorded 21mpg from a trip I was going through the mountains last weekend from sea level to 3,000 feet. It would probably be better 55mph on flat road.

Did you mod your car at all?

Fuel mileage doesn't really matter anyways I bought this car used and the savings can go into the extra fuel costs. I was actually debating a Nissan leaf before I came across this car used but I was like 40 grand or 7 grand lol that's a hell of a lot of fuel and a few transmission repairs...

No Mod. Only going by what the car is telling me. I've never physically calculated it.

Mine is an '04, 3.0 auto with just under 70k on the odometer. I run between Cleveland and Columbus on a regular basis at 70 mph. It is slightly uphill overall southbound and the trip odo shows 27.4 routinely. Northbound, it is closer to, or right at, 28 mpg. I've check the trip odo by looking at miles driven and actual gallons of fuel pumped and the trip odo is within 0.1 of what I calculate. I can't actually provide a real 'city' mileage since I spend little time in stop and go traffic. Normally, the trip odo shows around 22 mpg around town, on one occasion, as low as 20,

I use the 'auto' mode climate control so the a/c is usually on. I haven't any figures for winter driving in Ohio but the above numbers have been tallied over the past six weeks.

My 2010 Tacoma V6 only gets 19-20 on the same trip so I'm pretty happy with the Jags' performance. Even with premium fuel, my cost per mile is less with the Jag.

Incidentally, no mods done, chips, air filters, etc. I don't usually have my foot in it and believe in gradual acceleration (without blocking traffic, of course) rather than being first away from the traffic light.

Thermo,

Once again thank you for the info. And for taking the time and having the patience in dealing with what may seem like elementary questions.

NovaJoe seems we are in the same area mpg wise... Long Island stop and go and parking lot type traffic (its gets real congested here) is anywhere from 14-17. Thats about what my Jeep Laredo with the straight 6 4.0 gets local driving. Anyway when buying this car the mileage was not a concern of mine, I just fell in love with it. Just sayin' :-)

On my 2004 it's the button on the end of the turn signal arm. I think like three pushes gets to it. It's part of the tripometer function. Mine has A B. I keep B running so I know when to rotate my tires at 5000miles. A i usually reset each time i fill up.
