key fob failure to lock doors

This happened to me awhile back. An intermittantly faulty "hood open" sensor was the culprit. I pulled the switch out, jumped the leads within the connector, taped it up and that was that. Prior to, my machine would emit a faint "chirp" upon depressing the lock button on the fob, which meant that something was not closed (the hood). Fixed that.
Obviously, you may have a different issue, but mine was easy to track due to the "hood open" on the dash display. Hope you get to the bottom of it quickly.

I haven't tried anything besides replacing the battery....
It's been really cold here lately, and I don't have a warm place to work on the car.
I do "plug it in" so it starts nice in the mornings though.
I will probably wait until it either leaves me stranded calling for help, or it warms up enough to work on it comfortably outside.
Thanks f

Have you checked the little flap that closes in the ignition when you remove the key?
Quite often these get gummed up and remain in the open position when the key comes out (you can tell if it's working normally as you'll hear and feel it 'click'). If it is open, the car still thinks the keys are in the ignition and won't allow you to use the fob to lock. A little light oil on a Q-tip worked onto the flap should free it up.
On my '02 model I have to lube it every three months or so.
Hope this helps,
Regards

Heh, I just had a similar problem with the little flap that closes over the
outside lock on the driver's door. Took it to the dealer and instead of spraying some cleaner/lubricant in they replaced the entire lock assembly. But to do that they had to special order a lock assembly from England that matched mine and was logged to my car, took 2 months to arrive. Seems that when a dealer confirms a problem they replace the component rather than attempting a fix. Probably means fewer cars come back for a re-fix. I'd think is was only for warranty repairs though.
Don't know the cost, don't care, have a Ford Extended warranty that covers EVERYTHING (was only able to purchase it because my car was still covered under its Jaguar Select coverage)... :-)
