Default Key transponder.

As most of us know our X-Types have a Tibbe type key and the keyfob/remote with a transponder embedded within. Let's say you only have one key that will open the door and start the car, what are you to do to if you want a spare key? You're going to pay Big buck$! not for a key; Buck$ to have the car reprogrammed to add extra keys, which is the situation that I have with both of my X-Types.

Being the cheap, tightwad, Tom Petty loving bas**d that I am; I'm always seeking an alternative.

We know that we can purchase aftermarket fobs with uncut keys for a dime a dozen on fleabay, The real problem is that they either do not have a transponder, or the if they do it will need to be programed to the car (Big Buck$).

Now, What if you were to carefully remove the transponder from the fob or key and silicone it to the transponder receiver..

The downside:
1. Any Tibbe key "cut to fit "your" car" or a big screw-driver pounded into the ignition switch will start your car.. (Seriously; I don't hear many stories of X-Types being stolen).

The upside:
1. You can buy un-cut Tibbe keys and Jag remote key fobs on flea-bay for $15.. take it to a locksmith to cut it (same guy that cuts keys for Tibbe keyed Fords for $10.00 ea)
2. The ability to "Remote start" your X-Type..(Yes, to actually be able to drive the car you'll likely need to insert the key in the ignition).

Thoughts anyone?

Actually there was a member a long time ago that did something like this. Key was bad, he cracked apart the fob, removed the "pill" taped it under the dash, (close enough for the reader), used another tibbe key and ended up selling the car not disclosing his "hack" to the new owner. A bit sketchy, imo, not telling the buyer.

Default Question

Ok. I would greatly appreciate it if someone can give me a defenite correct answer for this question. I have only one working original switchblade key and fob for my 2006 Xtype. I bought another complete unit - with the blank switchblade key and fob. It also has the transponder chip in the upper portion of the key fob. My question is do I have to bring the uncut un-programmed key to a dealer to have it cut and programmed to start the Jag ? Or a locksmith qualified to cut and program Jag keys ? I’ve read about programming the fob buttons and that seems easy , but just need a definite answer so I know where to bring it to get it done. Thx fellas.

Or buy the software (SDD), a dedicated laptop, an OEM cable (clones are notoriously unstable) & do your own programming. Threads are in this forum on how & problems (clones)

The problem I see is that if the original (working) transponder 'pill' is secured to the exciter ring, another transponder is in the replacement key, there would likely be a 'conflict' when TWO are present?

You would probably need to 'drill-out' the replacement key transponder to ensure that no conflict exists?

There are people that can CLONE the key so that the same transponder signal is in EACH of the keys. (the car thinks there is only ONE KEY, same signal for all keys)
