Keyless Entry Question

From what I know about this keys, you have to have the dealer cut them and program them too. I bought one off of e-bay, with them saying any lock smith shop could cut the key. The key on e-bay cost me 10 dollars, I went to my local lock smith, he told me they're special keys. I went to my local Ford dealer, to see if they could cut them (part Ford). They told me only the dealer could cut them at the factory. You need to send your VIN number the key and some other information. But that's what I heard. I had a guy I know machine my key, but only the key not the key less. It unlocks the door, but will not start the car, that was fine for me so I can't lock myself out of the car.....LOL

If you want full key functionality, you'll need to go to the dealer. I actually just bought a new key - ordered, cut, and programmed cost me $400 total. $350 for the key, and $50 for 1/2hr for programming.
Kinda ridiculous considering the SmartKey for my Camry was $200 total. And the older style switchblade for my Mercedes was only $200 as well.

when I bought my X. Same thing, just one key. Bought a key online not ebay for $80. Key you attach to keyless remote & a valet key. Brought it to dealer & paid another $80. They mess up the valet key though.
They need to hook it up to the computer for the key to be programmed to start your X. If you bought the keyless remote. You don't need to hook up a computer, you can program it yourself.
I was qouted almost $500 by dealer before buying the keys online.

There are 3 parts to the key.
there is the metal part, which must be cut to physically make the door lock, glove comp, and ignition work mechanically.
There is an electronic bit just inside the plastic hinge area of the key, this is needed to allow the computers to start the car. Only the dealer can activate a new one of these.
the Remote control part of the key which arm/disarms and locks/unlocks the car is a seperate thing that can be programmed to the car at home. there are all kinds of places to get the instructions.
I think you need to make the question more specific as to what you are asking.

Hey, Stig!
Here's the instructions for the remote part:
1. Insert the key into the ignition with driver door open.
2. Turn key to Position II (all lights on dash are lit) and back to I four times.
3. You will hear a chime.
4. Pull key out.
5. Press unlock button on remote for each remote. A confirmation tone should sound for each.
Now, the only concern I may have (and I doubt this would be the case) is whether your car has the keyless entry module. I'm pretty sure it does.
Good luck!
