Default Loving the X-type

Just bought a 2002 Silver X-Type Sport for my daughter and she is loving it. She says its getting her all kinds of attention

Anyway, while it has only 67k on it, there were a couple of issue to take care of:
Heater vent on the dash had popped off due to dash vinyl warping - I glued it down with a bunch of GOOP and found that a couple of tennis ***** work great to wedge down the grille while the glue is curing - can't tell it was ever warped now.
Ashtray cover would not latch closed: After taking it off, I found the latch pin was out of the slot. Carefully levered it back in and now the cover latches closed again.
Clicking sound at J-gate whenever the brake was pressed. Based on a tip on this forum, I took off the cover and j-plate and opened up the micro-switch for park. The contacts were corroded and not completing the circuit, but just cleaning them fixed it. (Be careful not to dislodge the rocker bar- its so small it's a bear to re-install). That stopped the clicking.
Front speakers on Premium Alpine sound system not working. After disassembling following advice on this forum, I found the braided wires in the speaker were corroded through where they are glued to a support bar. I solders a light wire across the bar and Presto! both speakers now work. (Manufacturing defect by Alpine - the epoxy they used corroded the wires - probably happens a lot in these cars).
Now the only thing missing is the Leaper! maybe that will be this year's Christmas present!

Hey Jaggler, really nice post and a great present for your daughter too.

I bet she's well pleased!

Do yourself a favour as the 02's being early models suffered from the issues you mentioned and maybe a little more.
All of which are generally covered in the X type HOW TO sticky thread at the top of the page.

Please jump in to the new member section and create an intro too, so we can properly welcome you to the site

Welcome & change the transfer case fluid!

I glued down the dash vents with silicone about half a year ago, although the left one didn't stay put. I'll do it again this weekend.

Try Ebay Motors for the Leaper your daughters car is missing. Prices are, of course, much lower than dealer. Many happy miles with your X-Type!

Can you post a link to, or post a picture of this 'micro switch for park'. My car is doing the same and driving me bananas!

Sorry, I didn't take pictures - should have.

After you take off the J-gate cover (comes off by hand by pulling up at the front) you will see the metal j-gate plate. Remove the screws holding this down - need a torx driver - and lift it off from the shift lever (you will have removed the shift knob and metal nut first).

The switch is now at the top right of the opening and is seated on two pins.

It just pulls up easily. It is permanently wired in place, so swapping it would require soldering I believe.

Anyway, I carefully pried it open and found it was not making a circuit on close (close = Shifter in anything other than Park). The contacts were blackened, so I cleaned them. I suggest an emory board nail file for this, but be very careful to hold the rocker arm in place because I didn't, and spent a frustrating 20 minuted to get it back in place.

I think you could simply replace the switch and save some bother if you can solder the new switch in. Maybe there is even a connector at the other end of the wires (I didn't check). Hope that helps.

A great present and excellent fixes to resolve those minor trim issues which can become so irritating if left unattended.

Two tennis ***** in the heater vent - you must have a killer serve!
