Default Manual Tras. Clutch Switch, 2003 Not Working

Hi Guys,

Still going over my car (first day) to see what is not working.

2003, 2.5 ,5 speed manual trans.

I have discovered the the safety switch that requires the clutch pedal to be all the way down before the starter will crank, does not work. The car will start with the clutch all the way out.

I do not have a problem with that, as I have had lots of old cars, BUT is this switch the same one that trips off the cruse control when shifting? Now that can be a over revving problem if one forgets they have the cruse engaged...

Thanks,

Larry - Cleveland

Hi Larry,

You sound like a nice guy so I crawled under my dash for you.

The clutch peddle has two switches on it, one on the top end and one on the bottom end. My thinking is the switch on the bottom is for the starter lock out, and the switch on the top is for the cruse control cut out.

I did a test going 40 in 4th gear with the cruse on. When shifting to 5th the cruse felt like it stopped and the motor did not rev up. I will try this test again with the car on the lift as it would be safer.

Good Luck....(me)

Are you sure that the bottom switch is actually a switch? It could be just a plastic cup-thingy that keeps you from pushing the clutch pedal (and clutch actuator) too far out. Upper switch is definitely cruise control deactivation switch. Its kind of a reverse pressure switch that activates when clutch pedal moves away from it. I have to check on my car, but im not aware of any kind of clutch safety switch being installed on x type. Then again, I have an Euro-spec diesel so its most likely different from yours.

Mine doeshave a switch on the bottom on the clutch pedal travel. It has a plunger andtwo wires going to it.

For a numberof years it has been a requirement that the clutch pedal must be held to thefloor in order for the starter motor to turn...safety item.

I didnt know that. Its not required in my home country. As for the switch, try to unplug one or both of the wires. See if the car starts after that. I think the switch is simply stuck.

It starts fine in or out and will stay like it is till next summer.

I was just worried about the cruse cutout working, top switch.

Thanks : )
