Default The morning howl...

This is the 2nd time this has happened. Twice on Monday morningswhile I am driving to work(car sitting all weekend in a garage 50 degrees or so), there is a howl or whining sound coming from the car. It seems to have a high a low pitch to it as something is rubbing. The noise went away in less that 2 miles - I drove it really easy. Is this the need to grease the prop shaft issue?

Minus 50? Anyways, it soundsmost likely the Prop Shaft except at those temps it shouldn't have gone away within a couple miles.

Sorry my typing habit is horrible - it was 50 F degrees in the garage and 20 F outside.

That makes more sense. Thanks. My Prop Shaft never made a sound until it was about 40F outside. Scared the crap out of me the first day...then got worse as it got colder out..until it was replaced. Now it makes no noise even at -30F.

If your Prop-Shaft center support bearing is on it's last legs..then giving it a shot of grease may help..can't hurt.

aka"Drive Shaft"..

Prop Shaftis short forthe term Propeller Shaft..I think it has nautical ties to a boat or Airplane..the shaft that drives the Propeller..ergo, "Propeller Shaft" (However in the Navy we called that the Screw)

Now ask me How in thee Hell, did the Brits come up with BOOT for the Trunk andBONNET for the Hood?

Do I lube the part coming out of the tc or going into the rear diff - or both? I think I am under warranty until the last day of feb - hopefully this is covered.

Christo:
Check out that FAQ that Dennis posted. You'll understand more at that point.
I can't decide if performing that operation helped or not, but as Dennis says, "it cant hurt". Mine still howls on occassion, when it's under 20 degrees. I'm really hoping to not have to replace it, as I'm told to expect $1000 in parts.
Can anyone confirm / deny that?

So has anyone had an actual complete failure of the bearing or do most people replace it because the noise bothers them too much? Mine has not gotten any worse over the past year really and I just can't see paying $1,000 to fix noise when it's colder than 30 degrees F. I suppose if there comes a time that it needs to be replaced then I'll have to bite the bullet but until then I'll live with the noise.

True, if it was not under warranty and it was just a sound issue - I could certainly live with it, especially if it goes away in a few minutes. A little vibration too might be something I could live with also as long as it wasnt too extreme. But either way, lets hope that it doesnt create more problems from being in that state.

Never heard yet of one falling off the car, but it would probably make a hell of a racket before it comes apart

Well the sound came from the front of the car and had a high a low whine like it was rubbing while moving. The pain is it only does it in the morning after a weekend and my warranty is running out. The dealer wants me to leave the car but they said if they dont hear it they cant fix it - just great!

Christo - if it's cold overnight and your car is parked outside at the dealerand your Tech has any experience with the Prop Shaft noise, they'll hear it and know it right off. That is exactly what I did. Push for a warranty repair. It is not normal wear and tear, it is a well known problem with the original prop shaft center bearing.

Billinohio - Prop Shaft runs the length of the vehiclefrom TC to rear diff. Has a centre bearing where as Real_Tech points out in another thread, it is the rubber casing around the center bearing that is the actual culprit of the sound. If you get it done under warranty - bang on!

w.neurauter, you should try the grease injection and let us know if it helps.

I'm gonna try the "silicone-lube-on-the-rubber-surround" trick that Real_Tech suggested. (Already did the "grease-in-th-bearing" thing)

omg, i just recently experienced this kind of noise and i have told my mechanic repeatedly that the noise is somewhat related to the drive shaft. I asked them to lube it and lube it well... They are working on my car today for other issues and will let you know if the noise disappears.

My propshaft was replaced about a year ago, probably only 5-6,000 miles on it. It stillscreams like crazy in this cold. (I've seen -1 to -16f in the morningfor a week straight.) I can make it sound just like an ambulance by varying speed from 19-22 mph. (I'm easily amused.) I wonder what it sounds like to a pedestrian on the street?
