It probably sounds like " OMG it is cold. I wanna go home and get in the garage. What were you thinking taking me out in this weather? When are we moving to Florida?" Not really but good question. Wonder if it scares pedestrians as you scream by or if you only hear it well inside the cabin?

w.neurauter, you should try the grease injection and let us know if it helps.
I actually did do this a couple of months ago. It definitely seems to have helped however the problem is still there. As someone else mentioned it really only happens from 24-26 mph so it's not a huge deal.

well i have greased mine and it made no difference so then i give it a realy bath in good quality silicon grease and this is what it done in return for my efforts..........the damn thing still screems at me when its cold29-31 mph ithink my next step will be to give it a hot water bottle lol lol..

As bearings wear, they get smaller in diameterand the race gets worn out more due to lack of lubrication..so once this happens, the ball bearings are not fitting snugly against the race anymore and tend to float..At certain speeds (RPM) they tend to vibrate and set up a harmonic vibration..and cause the whining sound you all are hearing..in essence, the bearing is shot and no amount of grease will cure it..

I've experienced the howl in the last 2 weeks about 3 times and it went a way after the car warmed up. Should I be looking into replacing the propshaft or is this something I can just accept if I don't mind the howl sound.

You can live with it depending upon where you are and how much "cold" weather you have to deal with. Also depends on how self-conscious you are. Lastly, it depends upon whether you have the $1,000 to get the prop shaft replaced.

For me, I have too many months where the temperature is below freezing, couldn't stand the embarrassing noise which scared passengers and the cost was within my repair fund tolerances.

ok well that's is good to know for now, I can live with it for the time being, as I do not have the grand to spend on a new propshaft right now. I just don't want to be worried that it will lead to other issues or something that needs immediate attention. I don't drive anyone around in the car other than the spouse and it doesn't really bother either one of us. Would like to replace it eventually because the thing that does annoy us is the slight vibration at higher speeds.

Default Cold Howl

My 02 3.0 auto. howls on a cold day for 3/4 of a mile. Sounds like an amateur flutist.
