Needing help in deciding between a X type and a S type
Hello I am new here and have loved Jaguars since I was a young child. I finally have my first chance to buy a used Jaguar and I am torn on which to get.
I can get a 2005 X type 3.0 Sport Package for $5,200 asking price or I can get a 2001 S type 4.0 for $5,000
I plan to trade in a 07 Jeep Compass along with paying some cash for either one I also plan to get either for less than sticker price.
My question is which would you prefer and what one should I get.
I own a moving company and will be using it as my daily driver
Thank you for any suggestions you can provide!

The two cars are as different as chalk and cheese in almost every respect, so choosing which suits you best should not be difficult. As to whether it makes sense to trade in a 7 year old car for a 9 or 14 year old car is another matter.
Jaguars of any model or vintage, no different than any high end brand like BMW or Mercedes, are much more expensive to service. Most people are here because they want to DIY.

I know it may seem crazy to trade in a newer car for an older one however the jeep is a vehicle I have never cared for (it was my wifes before i got her an infinity) I have always wanted a jaguar and now am in the position to get one. I just don't know enough about either type to decide what would be better. I apologize if my question was not an acceptable one

Not at all. You need to go see and drive each car- they're very different from each other.
The X-type is like an AWD BMW 3 series, the S-type is like a larger and much more powerful 2WD BMW 5 series.
No one can predict which one will suit you best.

Hi, as Mikey says, chalk and cheese, the X is better finished and more economical, front or 4 wheel drive, the S is slightly bigger, only slightly, rear wheel drive, and in my opinion looks more dated. Both are well equipped, well finished and comfortable. Running cost for the X are lower. Have fun, Martin.

David, i am hopefully not going to confuse you with my answer. Lets start with a very simple question which will lead to an answer. Do you like driving light to light with some zip or do you like to just cruise at 75 mph for hours on end? The X-Type is going to be your cruiser and does not take well to lots of low speed/high power "launches". The S-TYpe is going to give you a lot more performance that is more reliable than the X-Type is going to offer.
As for comparing the two cars, the S-Type is going to be optioned out higher than the X-Type if you are looking at say base models. Sure, you can option out an X-Type to be higher than an S-Type. But, there are more options that are available in the S-Type and you can get it much fancier than the X-Type can ever imagine being. So, you would need to compare the two as they are optioned out.
LIke was mentioned, you can get a comparable XJ for very little more money and have a full size car with a lot more creature comforts. That is the way that I would lean if I was to go after a early 2000's Jag. They have proven reliability, can be had for fairly low cost and people will respect the XJ a lot more than the X/S-Types.
Please keep in mind that you can get some parts from say a Lincoln LS to fit on the S-Type. Kinda like you can get parts from a Volvo S40 to fit on the X-TYpe. This will help keep the costs down if you can do the repairs yourself.
