RE: New brakes... which kind?
If you're in the Uk and want some uprated brakes go to
http://www.ebcbrakesdirect.com/
and enter scooby58 at the checkout for 15% discount and free postage.
They also do rear grooved/dompled discs which for some reason dont appear when entering X Type car details but typing GD1050 in the search finds it.
Jaguar now supply the Greenstuff pads as standard (here in the UK at least) and I have the ceramic redstuff pads fitted.Much better than the brake fade I got with standard discs/pads (prior to OEM being greenstuff).

RE: New brakes... which kind?
I never heard of rotors being a composite....they usually are a nice chunk of solid machined steel.....of course the mechanic might have meant to say composite steel.....or something like that...but I would find me another service station...lol
The front pads do all of your stopping...well about 80-90% anyway...your rear brakes usually just are their to hang around...and only work when you have a serious situation...like when a deer pops out in front of your car when you're doing 90.....
So, front pads do all the work and usually are replaced with "metallic" pads...good because they are: cheap, quiet, have a life time warranty, last forever and offer good stopping power. That's all good if that's all you care about....unfortunately, the thing with metallic pads is that they eat rotors for lunch.....and the rotors usually wear out before the pads do..Hence the lifetime warranty....sure they'll replace your pads...but at the expense of your rotors which cost twice as much as the pads......whew...you with me so far?
So, long story short...your mechanic is probably right in saying that you need new rotors because you have metallic pads and they ate your rotors up to the point where machining the groove out will be beyond the safety limits....but not because they are composite....
My recommendation is to ask your new mechanic to replace your pads with new fiber or ceramic ones. These pads are quiet, great stopping power, won't leave dust on your rims and your expensive rotors will out last the brake pads.....down side, these pads cost a bit more....and yes, probably a good idea to replace your rotors....unless you don't care if your old ones explode while your driving.....
Here is a link for you.... these are the cheapest...enjoy and good luck...

RE: New brakes... which kind?
I bought 4 new discs on eBay from a guy in Ontario and chaged them myself. Easy to change out. Took about 2 hours for the front and I painted the calipers while I was at it. A lot less vibration as well. Very happy.
Cost for the 4 vented discs $180 CDN

RE: New brakes... which kind?
Gday boJangles. He has all sorts of cars available. Seems he has to be a brake disc manufacturer. The buy now is 169$ and they are great, they are also cross-drilled which IMHO was the issue with the stock ones. (The car is too heavy in the front for Mondeo discs) My mechanic started telling me at 35K kms that I needed to get new rotors. I looked at him and said, "whaaa....t, this car only has 35K on it and it's all highway". Well at 50K now I changed them myself and decided on drilled. I bought the pads at an auto store and went with Mintex. Bought the caliper paint at CDN Tire (can and brush, not spray on).
Cross drilled rotors in Ontario
They were shipped the next day and I got them in 2 days. I live in Quebec City so freight was about $40.00. Supplier packs real well. Very satisfied.
Cheers,

RE: New brakes... which kind?
RacerX82, they do make composite rotors, I have them on my Corvette. They cannot be turned like steel rotors, they are used on performance vehicles when money is not the issue, but stopping power IS. (They premium pads will have much more bite on a composite rotor, and will not glaze up).
Composite rotors will add $700 - $800 to the cost of a 4-wheel brake job. I dont have them on my X-type, I dont feel they are necessary (I rarely exceed 90mph in the Jaguar, not the case in the Corvette :-)

RE: New brakes... which kind?
Yes I agree...and I know that they have ceramic Rotors and pads...known as composites....anyway, like I said, his Jag doesn't have it. The 120K dollar XK doesn't have them either. The Ferrari’s and more expensive 220K dollar exotics have them, it’s an additional 20K dollar option.....
All good stuff when you have the cash flow...
