This is my first post so sorry if it’s been asked before. I have an ‘09 2.2D X-Type estate. It’s generally been a reliable car but it wouldn’t start recently while we were out shopping. The AA came out and the guy was actually really good. He scratched his head for a bit but as a last resort he tried blanking off the egr. It started straight away after he did this.

I’m no expert (obviously) but surely for it to be working fine then not start it must be a setting in the car somewhere, like the egr condition has passed a certain threshold so that tells the car not to start. Surely egr degradation is gradual so you wouldn’t see no start without it gradually running worse over time. Have I completely misunderstood this?


My MOT is next month so my question is can I successfully clean the egr or do you recommend getting a new one? Money is tight so I need the cheapest solution which will actually work properly. I’ve seen egr valves online for under £200. I doubt this is a genuine part so I wonder about the quality.
