Take a look at the X-Type FAQ at the top of this forum.
Since you don't know how well maintained it is.....
1) The transmission isn't really sealed and maintenance free! See the posts about checking, topping-up or replacing transmission fluid.
2) The same goes for the transfer case! Can't stress that enough!!!
3) The rear differential takes the same lube as the TC...better check it and top-up if needed.
4) The center of the driveshaft has a carrier bearing that you can grease using a needle end on a grease gun...it'll save it's life to grease that, and be quieter too.
5) Between the air filter and throttle body is the Mass Airflow Sensor. Take it out and clean it with brake or carb cleaner. Maybe even a Q-Tip carefully on the end of the little bulb.
6) There is supposed to be an air duct directing air up toward the transfer case to help cool it. Most X-Types are missing this...you might want to be sure it's there or buy one if it isn't.

Hey there DD....Seekers pretty much covered all the main stuff you're gonna need to be looking at so +1 on that.
Do yourself a favour and DO read thru the X type FAQ quick link thread.......so much info there for you buddy.
The 02's were the early models and suffered from some minor issues also such as problematic drivers / passengers door handles ( covered in the FAQ ) as well as dash vents popping too ( also covered in the FAQ )
I'd say if you spend a fair few hours here reading, it could help save you quite a few hours on the car and probably $$$ too...........good luck

thanks, i went to look at the faq but i am not able to view as i am a new member.
let me ask a quick question, I have to replace 2 studs on the rear hub. long story, my wife hit a curb and the lugs were on so tight that i snapped 2 studs trying to remove the broken wheel. as it was windy and 30 degrees out i was not happy. I'm looking but i cant figure out the stud size, any ideas?
