not selecting gears and gearbox fault

not selecting gears and gearbox fault
symptom.
will go into reverse and neutral but when shifting into D 4 3 2 transmission does not go into gear, just revs.
last couple mornings ive had trouble getting it into drive, but after moving the shifter and revving a few times it went into drive and all was good.
yesterday on interstate at 70mph on cruise, it downshifted to 60mph and message center read "gearbox fault" with orange lozenge illuminated.
pulled off shut car off and restarted.
message had gone but it was difficult to engage a gear, just revved for about 10 secs then sputtered into a gear and i was able to turn around and drive back home.
this morning it will only engage reverse and neutral, shifter moves into all gears but transmission is not shifting.
i notice shifter seems ro be not quite where it normally is in the D position.
no mil and no codes
has been a lot of rain so wondering if tcm got wet.
are these symptoms indicative of a bad tcm?
does the shifter have a cable or is it all electronic?

ive narrowed it down to being the shifter cable. im hoping it needs adjusting.
i can get it into drive every time if i slam the shifter down.
i'll check out those links tonite.
has anyone here adjusted this cable?

i saw that video earlier, unfortunatley it is for a manual x type not automatic.
also ditto with the reset imfo... im a little confused as to how to do it as the instructions say to loosen the adjustment bolt and "wiggle" the cable.
im not sure how that works and its seems a weird instruction.
we'll see tomorrow when i get that cover off.

replacing the shifter did not make a difference (altough it may not be adjusted right yet) anyhow with my parts car shifter disconnected i decided to go under the car and see how easily the shift lever coming out of the tranny moved back and forth.
it moved quite easily with little resistance, there was a white plastic (collar) around the lever and that moved freely both on the lever and in the transmission casing.
next i went under my car and did the same thing.
the first thing i noticed was the plastic collar is siezed into the transmission casing and does not move up and down freely like on the parts car.
next i tried moving the selector lever by hand like i did on parts car.
i was able to move it and get the gears engaged but it was very very stiff almost to the point i couldn't move it by hand.
i have sprayed it with pb blaster....has anyone come across this and what is the result?.
the pic im posting is of my car showing the 2 areas the plastic moves on the parts car but doesnt on mine

took the selector lever off the parts car so i could see how this setup works.
with the lever removed the white plastic bushing was able to slide off the spindle (pic attached)
took a pic of casing with plastic removed and i can see there is a ridge up imside which stops the plastic bushing from going up any higher. (pic attached)
on my car, i think the bushing has somehow got pushed up inside that ridge and is now wedged stuck.
i think i will have to break that bushing to get it out and then use my parts car one as a replacement

Not for our Jags but, interesting none the less. Pay heed to his description of "color; I looked all over and can't find the part, Mercs, BMW, Nissan (? Maybe jatco is there's), Ford (? Again), etc.
Seems on most cars this is a common failure at transmission and at shift (probably more on manual there).

thanks for that info, i will do some searching tmrw.
im now wondering if it is supposed to be rigod like it is or loose like the parts car?.
either way i will likely remove it as i think its binding the rod, perhaps the rod has some corrosion under the bushing that can be sanded off

FIXED!
after soaking overnight in penetrating oil the bushing would not come out.
i ended up drilling it out which destroyed it but no matter as i was loaded with corrosion.
once i removed it, the shifter rod was able to move easily again.
the rod had so much corrosion that i could not slip the other bushing on. i wire wheeled the rod in situ and then the partd car bushing slipped right on and moved freely.
i went back inside the car and reconnected the shifter cable, now all gears work as they should and all lights illuminate as they should.
this can be considered one of the fixes for a "gearbox fault" message and/or problems with the transmission not going into drive even though the D is illuminated on the shifter.

in the front of the trans casing is a hole approx 1/2" diameter directly in front of the gear selector rod.
water is able to enter that hole, and as my bushing was blocking the exit of the rod, water was able to stay in the cavity above the bushing and thats why the rod got corroded. as usual...bad design.
the rod fits inside that bushing with basically no clearance, so water that gets in there cannot easily escape.
one would have to pretty much hammer the bushing in to get it where mine was.
i did not push the new one in like that, i let it freely rotate in that cavity so any water that gets in can escape.
i cannot see any benefit to hammering that bushing up in there.
the rod is solid with no back and forth movement so the bushing really isnt even needed (IMO)
i hope ups delivers ur rad hose assbly today...be sure to tell us what fun you had installing it!.... lol

You want someone with a clue.
P1000 is:
1. a pending code not a fault code
and
2. a status code not a fault code
He SHOULD know the above, whether by prior experience, using a proper tool or by putting a bit of effort in and looking it up. Get rid of him.
