I like my Equus 3130, but you may be fine with an Equus 3040. Go to www.iequus.com Amazon.com and Walmart.com have great prices. The 3040 will be about $80 and it will let you see live data (as it happens).

Watch out for the ABS data ones. They may only work on the big name cars.

This is the exact model I have: UPDATABLE CAN Universal OBD2 OBD II Code Scanner/Reader - eBay (item 190517330899 end time Mar-29-11 17:00:00 PDT)
It tells a descriptor of the code on screen, has real-time data logging, and allows you to erase. Also looks up dealer codes - P1xxx.

I just use the cheap eBay ELM 327 that hooks up to my computer. Works fine for me. I get real time data too. Its kind of flimsy but does the job. If I made a living by using one, I'd buy a nicer one, but for $22, it works fine
Mine is the bluetooth one btw.
New ELM327 Bluetooth OBD-II CAN-BUS V1.4 Scan Tool Fast - eBay (item 280610128660 end time Mar-30-11 22:57:53 PDT)
Looks like this seller is charging more for it now, but I bought it for $22.
