Oh No it's back to Jaguar main Dealer.

Has anyone cracked the OBD2 codes for the Jaguar X Type ? I've now got a fault on my Parking Assist and it's only possible to have it diagnosed by Main Dealer. Same happened last year with an ABS fault. Both faults were simple failures but cost an Earth 'cos of Main Dealer pricing.

Andy, if you are having issues with the parking assist, what you will need to do is to turn the key to the "RUN" position (do not start the car) and then set the parking brake firmly. Now, put the car in REVERSE and get out of the car. Walk to the back of the car and put your ear up to each of the parking sensors. You should hear a high pitch chirp/squeal. If you hear a chirp from 3 of the 4 sensors, the sensor that is not chirping is bad and you need to put in a new one (side note, there are 2 different style sensors back there, one that plugs in straight on to the sensor, another that plugs in at a 90 degree angle). If none of the sensors are chirping, then you have a control module problem. First check the fuse to the parking aide module to make sure it is good. Next, using a multimeter, verify that it has 12 VDC at the module itself (module is located in the spare tire well, to the left side a little ways as you open the boot/trunk). If you don't have 12 VDC, then you have a wiring issue. If you do have 12 VDC, are you getting a long, single tone whenever you put the car in REVERSE? No tone, odds are you speaker is toast and you need a new speaker. If you can get a tone, but the sensors are not chirping, odds are you parking aide module is toast and it needs replaced.
Not much to that system. Sorry I can not tell you specific wire colors or fuses to look at, but I am on travel and don't have this information available at the moment. HOpefully one of the other members can give you that information.

Andy, they make code readers that will access them, but plan on spending about $2000+ on a reader capable of reading them. Lower cost ones will only read the engine codes. But, there are ways around reading the codes to figure out the issue, hence my post. Yes, codes are nice in that they tell you a specific problem. But, in your case, I do not see you spending that kind of money just so you can read that code yourself.

The Jag seems reluctant to give up its codes to anybody other than the Main Dealer. Last year I had a 2.5 AWD V6 with a similar problem. Silly me, I decided to go with the codes and bought a £80 replacement module. Ended up that the module would require reprogramming anyway, and as it happens, my new one was either faulty or the wrong one. Because I hadn't bought it from them I would have to pay both for another new one and the reprogramming - I just lived without Parking Assist. I've now got the 2.2TDi Estate which does need a set of eyes in the bumper to park.

He said nothing about an automatic, and last I checked, manuals have reverse gear too! It sounds more like someone hearing what they wanted in order to profile a country of people!

We love the Americans - it's great when they come to our little country.
Mine has got FRONT and REAR assist which makes life complicated. Either can cause a fault. The FRONT ones use the vehicle speed to activate them. In this instance I have rely upon Jaguar diagnostics. Someone will make a Jaguar compatible OBD2 device sooner or later.

AutoEnginuity with Jaguar Enhancement can read all the Jaguar codes plus get live readings from most of the sensors, both Powertrain and many other general systems - ABS, Climate Control, Central Locking, seat motors, etc, etc. Does everything it says on the tin! Check it out at Gendan for easy UK purchase - only £408 so only a couple of dealer visits saved will probably pay for it!!
The front sensors barely complicate the issue or fault finding process descibed by Thermo - just listen to the front sensors to ensure they sound or not - I would describe their noise when OK as a high frequency ticking. They all just feed back to the same module which has the one power supply.

Tony, I am not taking anything personally. We all have our days where we read something with rose tinted glasses. Lord knows I am guilty of that periodically. Gotta smile and move on.
Andy, not all X-TYpes came with the front and rear parking sensors. That was only an option after 2005. Since you did not state the year of your vehicle early on, I had to make some assumptions. But, like was said, you can check the front ones too. In this case, have the ignition switch in the RUN position (motor not running), put the car in 1st gear with the parking brake set and then get out and listen to the front sensors. LIke was mentioned, they all send signals back to one module to analysis. so, what I said early on still applies. The only difference is that you will only get the initial long "failure tone" when putting the vehicle in REVERSE. It will not do it when being placed in a forward gear.

Heima, take a look at: Drew Technologies : Introduction. I think you will find that unless you spend big big bucks, your idea is out to lunch. It seems that Jaguar has thrown a monkey wrench into things. It may be an old website, but atleast for awhile it was not as cheap as you think. You can get the reader (same as what most of us are getting), but the problem comes with the program needed to access the data that you are after and the special "passwords" to get beyond the ECU.

Hey, I'm a Brit living in Florida since the late 80s. I drive an X Type with an auto trans. Does that make me a Yank in your eyes? I admit I took US citizenship in '94. But still love the excitement of Lucas electrics and Girling brakes!
By the way ( should have written BTW. More American) my ABS light is still on!
As my wife says "British cars and British men. Not too sure what she means but I'm sure it's bad.
Good luck with your parking beepers.

Andy, I just spend $10 USD (about 8 euro) on an ELM327 bluetooth reader and then I got a free app for my smart phone and it works great on my X-Type (2003). Ok, the reader will not read the C, B, and U codes, but it does give real time display of the parameters going through the ECU. So, that is nice. Been playing with it some. I know the Torque app (free app) has specific stuff for the TDi engines. So, should be something that will work for you. Besides, for the cost, if it doesn't what are you really out? If you don't have a smart phone, then you can use a laptop with bluetooth or you can get a corded ELM327 and plug it directly to a computer via USB.
