Andy, think aout this - you paid out £311. The new module was £173 of that (That's dealer price plus tax but without the discount that's available if you ask) So £138 that would have gone a good way to buying AutoEnginuity. It may not take so long to pay for itself as you might think!
That said, in this case, Thermo's check method would establish the problem without a scanner, but when faults arise that really do need to be scanned with an Jaguar enabled scanner, it doesn't take long to clock up £400 at the Dealer!!

Andy, I just spend $10 USD (about 8 euro) on an ELM327 bluetooth reader and then I got a free app for my smart phone and it works great on my X-Type (2003). Ok, the reader will not read the C, B, and U codes, but it does give real time display of the parameters going through the ECU. So, that is nice. Been playing with it some. I know the Torque app (free app) has specific stuff for the TDi engines. So, should be something that will work for you. Besides, for the cost, if it doesn't what are you really out? If you don't have a smart phone, then you can use a laptop with bluetooth or you can get a corded ELM327 and plug it directly to a computer via USB.

I couldn't get the ELM327 to work at all, the PC wouldn't even talk to the car. Maybe at 2008 Jaguar have just become too clever.
I'm just waiting for the new XF estate. There is going to be a Jag SUV soon too. The XF estate is already sitting in our pilot workshop, looks lovely.

I opted for the KIWI Blue tooth and use it with Torque Pro on a Toshiba Thrive tablet. It cost more but it worked the first time on both my '97 XK8 and '07 X Type.
