oil changes
I am going tomorrow to get my oil changed and I just remembered something that my master Jag tech told me. I asked how often I should change the oil in this car. I told him how for some reason I remember seeing something about every 5k miles. He told me every 3k. When I asked why not 5k he explained. Jaguar may tell you every 5k miles but, there is a small disclaimer that will read “under abusive wear and tear” that does not mean driving 100 mph in the desert when it is 100 degrees out. That is not abusive. Abusive is the short trips you make around town. The car (oil) never has a chance to get to proper temp, circulate, and do what it is designed to do. Ever since then I change mine every 3k miles. Just a little FYI….

RE: oil changes
JV - When I bought my '02 the engine had 70K and was questionable, for that reason I bought the car dirt cheap. I found an '04 engine w/ only 17K on it and had my independent shop put it in. I asked him the same question and he said without doubt to change the oil every 3000, not 5000 particularly since I am using dino (non-synthetic) oil per the Jag specs. If you search this (and other) site you will see the age old battle between whether to use synthetic or non-syn oil. JagTech or others may be able to tell you better, but my reading of it is that the synthetic will effect the performance of the VVT system. For me its non-syn and 3K miles...gives me a good excuse to crawl under the car!

RE: oil changes
IMO..Synthetic is fine, I've been using Castrol Syntec for the past 30,000 miles from new and have used it in other carsand they have allran flawlessly in to the triple digit mileage..I've been maintaining my own oil changes for the past 35+ years.....If your car has high mileage and has been living on a diet of DINO oil..Stay with DINO..And change it every 3000 miles like Red said.
When I asked my JAG dealer about this topic, he said they put in DINO oil as that was part of the complimentary 10,000 mile FREE service..but if I liked SYNTHETIC instead, they would put it in, but I would have to buy it for them to put in...No problems with using it though.

RE: oil changes
Pull your head out of the sand you IDIOTS...... there is plenty -- and I mean endless scientific-technical evidence of two things...
Synthetic oil can have longer drain intervals. (up to 20k km )
THE FREAKING GLOBE IS UNDER ATTACK FROM wasting the most obvious things like motor oil
There is nothing but folklore and unfounded **** that surrounds the arguement for 3k oil changes. It is irresponsible, and unacceptable to make your decision on oil changes based on what rumours you hear. There is no risk nor danger to using 8 or 10k (mile) oil changes with synthetic oil. I do mine at 12-14k km
THERE IS RISK AND THERE IS DANGER from too frequent oil changes.
God I hate this discussion

Ahhh the old oil debate.....again!....
About every 3-4 weeks or so this crops up.......what type, how much, how often, which brand, etc etc
Lets try n keep this as friendly as possible please.
Bo - you have your thoughts and others have theirs, that simple, end of story. DONT start name calling or having a go at other members cos their ideas and or opinions don't match yours. Please by all means voice your opinions, thats what wer'e all here for one way or another. Just treat people the way that you'd expect and want to betreated.
Thanks

RE: oil changes
Everyone being neutral and lovey dovey does not help anything. Opinions are the problem here. We need facts, science, engineering - not opinions. My points are based on facts.
I purposely made a strong statement, not to be a loudmouth, not to be a hot air generator. I said it the way I did to make an impact on those who refuse to update their learning and opinions.
It is idioticto over do oil changes, the proof has been done through thousands of tests and billions of miles of driving.
Getting oil analysed is whatthe research does. There is no real reason to do such a complicated task, unless you want to go beyond the maximum interval. The results of the research are what lead to the 20 000 km oil drain intervals in europe (where they do less highway driving) there is already a safety factor in that frequency. I have already added a huge other safety factor in what I recommended. I think that I have heavily erred on the side of caution when I suggest a 8k mile or 12k km frequency.
I am sorry that you dont like the word IDIOT.. but if you do idiotic things... then eventually you will be called an idiot. I dolike the redX car.. it is awesome.
The global warming is entirely agreed on by the scientific community. The nay-sayers are simply wrong. The proof is there and it is done. Just because you have not followed it technically, does not make it go away. Leave politics out of it, and dig into the heart of the matter.
As the saying goes.. if you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem
Please I dare you.. give me some valid reason (not comfort or happiness or peace of mind), a real reason to shorten the drain interval. Back it up with something that is not an opinion.
My X type has a fully doccumented history, with oil changes every 10k km up until I got it, and about the same since then. I am at 185000 km now. The engine is totally leak free, does not burn any oil, I have had the valve covers off, and the cams, and cam gear is spotlessly clean and without any signs of wear. I have measured the valve clearances, they are unchanged from factory settings. My car passes emission testing. It has been driven in harsh conditions often, with cold winters, and hot summers. This is still just anecdotal, but helps back up the proof that longer oil drain intervals do not harm the car.

RE: oil changes
Bo, I'm not on one side of this or the other mate..
Personally, having driven company vehicles for over 16 years, mostly Ford Mondeos TDCI diesel variants, latterly were being service every 20k miles which obviously included the oil change.
In between those times I kept a fairly close eye on it for the first few months, especially when new. It never used a drop of oil between changes and ran on quite happily for 160k on my last one and ran like a dream.
In fact after it loosened off it just got better n better.
I certainly don't believe in changing oil at 3 or 6 or even 10k mile intervals and have found it totally unneccessary to do so, but, thats just my experiences.
My Audi A6 uses oil and certainly initially needed topped up at 4k and 9k miles and went on until its service at 18k miles. Now sitting at around the 27k mile mark and all seems fine.
Everyone to their own.
Please don't call people Idiots because their opinion differs from yours. By all means put your arguement as strongly as you wish, but, no name calling, especially to the newer members who don't know how to take you, you numpty

RE: oil changes
Imagine that all the unnecessary oil drained out of engines in the good old USA was dumped onto your neighbour hood park, onto your streets and back yard.
Would there be any harm? Would there be any increase risk of illness?
I know - -blaa blaa blaa recycle... but I am quite certain a significant portion of motor does not get recylced and the process for what is recycled is not perfect.
remember, the three R's Been teaching it to kids for ages. http://www.recyclingsupermarket.com/...-recycle-song/
