RE: Ok, here it is..better this way
I wrote a whole guide with pics to replacing the head unit on the x-type, as well as getting the steering wheel controls working with any aftermarket head unit that has an infrared remote control. It's 6.6mb all together as a MS word file (there are a lot of pics).
Unfortunately, I dont have a place to host it. If you guys want it, and if someone has a place to host it, i'd be glad to share. A couple guys on here already have a copy.
Let me know,
George

Actually, it just stopped working one morning. The touch screen still works, but I just can't see Jack. The remote still works, and I can control the radio through the external screen, but I'm still going to be out about $50! [] So much for getting it cheap!

Yeah, but I like the discreetness factor of the single din! Also, the motor for the pop out screen is cheap to change should I encounter a problem with that! I have a few buddies that have similar ones and they've had no issues. Hope I didn't get a lemon!

Yeah you were screwed the second you said some of my buddies, its cheap to fix, and they've had no issues and last but not least you said "Hope i didn't get a lemon!" Where did you get it from and how much? What are the specs on it again??? Like the pioneer number is it a deh or what.....You should have talked to me before you went and bought it because I have connections in car audio....oh well! What do you have to pay the 50 bucks for? Apparently you didn't get it new?
Cheap or not the look of that radio is not in my taste...all of the bouncing around it'd do in the dash would irritate the life out of me!

First off, I secured it pretty well, so no bouncing...even though the first day I got it in it bounced like slingy! My lady gave it to me for Father's day, even though I'm no father. When she handed it to me and said Happy Father's Day, I said I'm not a father...her reponse: "Yeah, but you're my papasito". I was flattered but pissed because I know how expensive these get. Ends up being that she got it from her boss, because he took it out of his SC400 and was going to put it in his new LX. However, his new LX came with navi, so he told my girl to put it on e-bay. She asked him how much he wanted for it and he said $500. She called me and asked me to do some research on it, because she had to buy one for her boss. I did, and told her it was a really good unit, but quite expensive brand new. That's all she needed to hear. She told her boss that she'd buy it and he said give me $250 and it's yours. So with that and the antenna($50) which stayed in the SC since he never got a chance to take it out before he traded it in, we got it all for $300. Can't beat that! I was very surprised though, because she tricked me into telling her the unit was a good one!

My first single din sceeen did that.... It would flicker, and then lose the image completely. It turned out to be a bad ribbon cable in the screen. I ended up exchanging it for a different screen and haven't had any problems since.I too like the discreteness of the single din. Plus in the X-type i think a double din screen that is exposed would sit really low for being able to use it properly.
I actually have a pretty complete alpine CVA-1005 setup sitting here collecting dust. I have the Fold out screen, and the brain, and the din cable between the brain and the screen, as well as the FM antenna cable. You would need a din cage, trim ring, the brain wiring harness and the remote to make it complete. Those items cost about $110 on ebay. I'd let my parts go for $200, so if anyone is interested they could have an alpine foldout setup for $320 or so complete. I just never bothered with it. The only thing I didn't like about the alpine setup is the fact that you have no disc in the dash, you need an mp3 or a dvd changer as an external source. (OR you could use a stand alone dvd player or something, it does have 2 aux inputs).

Hey George, nice name first of all. For the $300, I got a "Pioneer". That speaks for itself. Not to be cocky, but I know I got a nice deal, seeing as for that price, I got the Navi, DVD Player, MP3 Player, AM/FM(duh), Remote, and the awesome audio quality!

Yeah I love pioneer Biggie and wow you did get a phat deal on it...I couldn't have gotten you that good of a deal! I was waiting to hear you tell me you spent like 800 for it...but for 300 that thing would have already been in my car! For that it would be worth it to me to slap a single-din in for sure! The double din actually actually mounts well down below you can tilt the screen out a few times to get it just right...besides if you use the steering controls you never end up looking down there anyway...I know I don't! Good deal though Biggie!

Oh I definitely agree, for $300 that is quite a deal. Is it the AVIC D1?
The only thing i didn't like about the nav screens, at least the pioneer ones, is the fact that they need the disc in the head unit to navigate, as well as being only able to have one source on the screen at any given time. Granted, with ipods and the like that's becoming more of a moot point than anything else, but that's just me. Can you still listen to music with the map up? Does it interrupt the music to give you directions?. I actually have a separate portable Magellan GPS mounted up higher between the two center A/C vents for nav. I considered the dual navatlas for a while, as it is hard drive based, and also has a 20gb mp3 player built in, but once again I would have to switch sources.
Take care,
George
