Oxygen Sensor and other problems.. Please Help
I am a total noob here and I am posting for my father.
He has an 02 X-Type with a 2.5 engine and 198K miles on itand we were told by a reliable mechanic that we need to replace the oxygen sensors.
I just have a few questions:
1) Where are they on the car?
2) How Many are there on the car?
3) Where can I get them?
4) How Much do they cost?
My Father and I have both workes on cars for years, but never replaced oxygen sensors.
The problems with the car are:
1) the car is bucking at like 3000 RPM when accelerating only when the "cruise not available" message is on
2) Check Engine light is always on
3) Car smells like something is burning
Please PM me or reply to this post.
Thank you so much!

From the looks of it when I had my tranny out for my recent clutch change, i'm sure those o2 sensors are hell to get to. Not sure how much it costs, though. So I'd just start callin around or try to do it yourself.
How much did you pay for that car? 198k is a lot of miles for an 2002.

where are you located.. maybe we can help you get the OBD codes read.
there are 4 O2 sensors.. they are screwed into the exhaust systems just before and just after the Catalytic converter.... and there are two cats on the X, hence the 4.
They each can give bad readings and trigger the check engine light. but normally an O2 sensor fault will not give horrible performance. typically the car will resort to some default setting for the fuel mixture and run reasonably well. the car will likely fail an emissions test and the fuel economy is usually affected.
Ask your mechanic to explain the logic behind changing every o2 sensor.

I dont think we have single wire o2 sensors.. that weblink is not for the right kind.
I looked in the JTIS and the heated o2 sensors are pre-cats, and the catalyst sensor is in each catalyticconverter.
quote
"Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S)The heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) is a linear characteristic type sensor, fitted forward of the exhaust system's catalytic converter. The ECM uses this as it's primary sensor to measure the oxygen content of the exhaust gasses within the exhaust system to provide closed-loop fuelling control.
Catalyst Monitor SensorThe catalyst monitor sensor is a non-linear characteristic type sensor fitted to the exhaust system's catalytic converter. The ECM uses this as it's secondary sensor to measure the oxygen content of the exhaust gasses within the exhaust after they have passed through the catalytic converter. As well as providing additional closed-loop fuelling control the ECM uses this information to determine the efficiency of the catalytic converter.

Preciesly, if you're getting a burning smell in the cabin, I'm willling to bet you've been riding on failing down-stream O2's for a while. To the point that either your pre-cats or shot, or the cat itself. Get the engine codes pulled, that'll tell you for sure.
Cats and pre-cats are crazy expensive. However, there are ways around it i.e. gutting the precats and using a MIL eliminator to make sure you're not throwing a code or placing a straight pipe in place of cat (find the shadiest exhaust shop in town, b/c this is illegal) !
If it is just a down-stream O2 sensor, and that only. I dunno, probably $30-50 for the part.

The trans was rebuilt about 20K miles ago. My father and I have done regular maintenance like oil chages, andspark plugs.
