Does anyone know if changing the Output Speed Sensor is called by another name ? For Example: ABS Speed Sensor or VSS or OSS
Confused, I need to change this on my Jag and I am having trouble locating this part. Any info I will appreciate if you don't know post don't know per posting requirements, remember two are the requirements or you will get kicked off.

Cleo, are you also getting an ABS fault on your instrument cluster (ie, ABS light or a message about the ABS system)? If you are getting the message/light, then you are most likely looking at a sensor on the wheel, which are called ABS wheel sensors.
If you are not getting a message about the ABS system or the ABS light, then you are looking at most likely either the tranny computer or the wiring going to/from it. Unfortunately, without some electronic tools which you will only find in a shop, diagnosing this at home is not possible.

You are having trouble locating the sensor because it is internal to the transmission. The only access to it is by splitting the case. You can access the wiring to it at the transmission electrical connectors at the front of the trans for testing. Jatco has a cheat sheet with all pinouts and resistances for every sensor but I don't have one here at home. On Monday I should be able to either post a PDF copy or at least the pins and resistances.

Hi Thermo,
My check light is on, not my ABS. The car will not go past third gear. I was reading that the transmission has a sensor, the one the Real Tech posted about and if it does not work properly the car will not accelerate to third gear. Is it possible that this is all the car has, or is it toast. I understand a regular OBD II will not due, I need a specific transmission reader. What can I do to see if it's the sensor? I am getting ready to take it to a tranny shop, just waiting for money. He told me over the phone he would charge me $220 to run the transmission check and if itn has to be rebuilt $1200. I live in LA so I guess it;s competitive when eveyone else is paying between $2500 and $3500. Your opinion on this is highly appreciated.
Thanks

The output sensor wiring harness has a failure rate also. You don't identify the MY or miles on the transmission which will play into the repair equation.
$1200 for a transmission rebuild is a little scary. Losest price on a rebuilt unit is about $1700 on the floor and that comes with some negative comments.

We have a transmission rebuilder right across the street from the dealership that is very good. There have been at least 3 X-Type, 4 6 speed, 5 ZF 5 speed and a bunch of Ford 5 speeds put in at the dealership that came from him. Not one has been back with trans faults. The X-type units go fro $1250. The cost doesn't mean much, the rebuilders skill is where it's at.
You know what AAMCO stands for don't you?

No thanks, I'll send mine to Jim across the street.
