Default Pleae Help - 'siren' noise varies w/ speed

Good morning,

Topic 1:
I have a 2004 X-Type, 2.5 AWD. Now that it is cold out (25 F and below), I've been noticing a high pitch "siren" type noise while driving roughly 30 mph. It doesn't matter if I push in the clutch when this happens or not. If I accelerate, it gets a little louder, then goes away. Any thoughts?

Topic 2:
Yesterday my check engine light came on. This morning, I noticed it started a little harder than normal, (8degrees F is the air temp), after I let it warm up a bit, I left for work. When I first left, if I got above 3k RPM's, the rev limiter would kick in, so for the remainder of the trip, (26 miles) I kept it below 3k RPM's until I got to work. I then tried to rev past 3k while driving, and it seemed fine again, however the check engine light is still on. I'm going to check the airfilter first, any thoughts?

Default Me too

I have an 02 sport model that is doing the same thing right at 30mph. It only does it if I hover around that speed like when I'm driving through the neighborhood. If I accelerate through it quickly, it doesn't do it. I was thinking maybe I needed some fresh driveline fluids. I just picked up the car and haven't changed trans, diff, t box fluids, nor have I done any shaft greasing yet. I'm not even sure if it needs it. It appears the PO did the shaft, you can see where some of the excess grease was thrown out under the car.

Default Possible answer to our problem

I was looking around the forum, and it sounds like it is the propshaft bearing. There are some good instructions with pictures that can be found that show how to grease this bearing with a needle type fitting on your grease gun.

I had the same occurrence yesterday on my 2004 3.0L X Type Auto w/78K miles. It was 15deg F when I drove home from work, the car had sat for 10 hours in the cold and then while (snow plowing) driving, one mile into my trip it made the loudest siren like noise from the front passenger side of the vehicle. I first suspected belt whine or pulley bearings, but it did not vary pitch with RPM. Then after just a few seconds it went away. It was suggested that it might be the canister purge valve, known to be noisy when cold. Any ideas?

Update: Warmed up some grease (flows through the needle better) and followed the instructions in the FAQ. This seems to have fixed the problem. Jeff, from reading all of the info in the forum regarding your symptoms, I would start with greasing the shaft bearing first. It could be something else, but the bearing seems to be the most likely culprit. Plus, it's the easiest and cheapest place to start to diagnose your problem.
