Premium audio sub woofer
Hi everyone. My first post here. The 2003 X that I own has the Premium audio package with the trunk mounted black box that I assume is the amp/ subwoofer unit. The 2002 X Sport I own does not have this unit. I want to remove it from the 2003 to install in the 2002, but only if the wiring is already in place on the 2002 (plug & play).
Does anyone know if the wiring is in the non premium cars?
Thanks

RE: Premium audio sub woofer
Hi Ken,
No the car will not have the wiring in place. Before thinking about adding it though (which as mentioned is possible with an adapter harness) you need to bear in mind that you cannot downgrade a premium system to standard. If you remove the amp/sub box from your 2003 X-Type then it will have no working stereo system at all, and you would need to modify a lot more of your cars wiring to allow the standard system to operate than you would to acheive the opposite. IMO the cost to revert to standard will be more than buying a new amp/sub unit for your 2002 X -- I wouldn't attempt to do it unless the donor car was being written off.
The good news is that if you want to retrofit the earlier-style premium sound system to a car it is easier to do and cheaper than the later style that Buck is doing above (although the post-2004 system has a lot more features). You just need a new amp/sub unit for the parcel shelf,tweeter/handles for your doors, a couple of connectors you should be able to source from a scrap yard and about 50m of twisted 16/0.2mm and 20m of untwisted 7/0.2mm equipment wire.
