Problem with cooling fans

Hi Jag forums
We are currently having some issues with the cooling fans on our ’03 Xtype. They appear to have a mind of their own… When we start the car from cold, the fans will start approximately 10 seconds later and run at full speed. After driving the car for a while (5 minutes), the fans will slow to approximately 50% and continue for the remainder of the trip. When we stop the fans will continue to run for 10 to 20 sec.
After an initial inspection we replaced the thermostat as it had gone faulty. We were hoping that this would correct the fans from running consistently, but not the case. The things that we have checked includes: -
-- OBD temp reading – constant at 85deg C
- - Waterpump – checked OK
-- Temp Sender – Resistance reading aligns with what is considered normal
-- 15V at the input to Fan module – Full speed at start up.
-- Coolant fine and car does not overheat
Any ideas???

MLLAS, the fans are controlled by the ECM, not by the thermostat on the car. Keep in mind that if you have the climate control turned on (set to defrost or A/C), the fans will kick on right away. SO, make sure that the climate control is turned off. Then see if the fans are still coming on.
If this is the case and you are getting a corresponding signal from the ECM, then you have a problem with the ECM. If you are getting no signal from the ECM yet the fans are running, then you have a failed fan control module. Granted, normally when the control module fails, the fans will not run at all. So, it is leaning back towards a bad ECM if there is a fault. If you want some more info, let me know.

The fans are controlled by an electronic module, which gets it signal from the ecm... the ecm gets its information from a temperature sensor.
Failure of the fan module is sorta common, and it sucks because they only sell the entire fan assembly with the two fans and the module together.
If you search around you will find a used module, without all the other stuff.
The dealer's computer can read fault codes from this module and help you decide what to do.
Certainly I dont think it is the thermostat...
