Problem with trunk opening

My remote will not open the trunk. It seems to actuate the latch only half way. I have a late 2003 with what I believe is the newer style latch. When I use my remote it will not unlatch entirely. I can feel the lid is half unlatched but will not open. If I push the release button it sometimes will not open at all.
I have inspected the latch and when I lock it by hand I can acuate it with remote and it will fully unlock. The same with the button. But, once I close the trunk it will no longer open with the remote just the button.
Any ideas how to fix?

I started a thread last month about getting my groceries locked in the trunk for six hours. Darn thing just would not open with the transmitter (even the doors won't open half the time) nor could I push the button ... it would NOT push in and unlatch.
Since then, I've found that it MAY be related to how I extract the key from the ignition as crazy as it seems. If I restart the car, turn it back off, then try the trunk, it opens like there was never a problem. I've only tried this a couple of times, so I don't know if this works EVERY time or not.
This problem and the transmitter in general, the oil pan leaking, and the code on the dash related to the MAP sensor has plagued me since buying the car at the end of last July (2-1/2 months ago). On the plus side, I'm getting great fuel economy, the car runs very smoothly, and it's much quieter than my previous car. Yin and yang I guess.

It's not the remote. I think it is something to do with the latch itself. If I lock it manualy it unlocks just fine with the remote. Closing the trunk is when it will not unlatch completly. It seems to get hung up. The latch isn't opening all the way.
Pushing the button sometimes unlocks it.
