Default Project X400

Ok, so following GGG’s advice I’m going to start a build thread. The project started out as a 02 X-Type 3.0 Automatic, and well I’ll let the photos do the talking. For those of you who say it’s not possible, think again. I’ve tested it and electronically it works. I’ve ran the 4 additional wires for the clutch switches. The engine wiring loom already had the correct wiring in it. All I had to do is run the wires from the pedal to the black 42 pin connector and the 8pin connector. Labeled as JB2 and JB145.

Had the shifter and cables rebuilt with Delrin Bushings. Should have a nice crisp feel to it.

I just realized that the photos of the shifter and cables are before I sent them to Alexthemachist to rebuil and make new Delrin bushings. The shifter tower now has solid aluminum mount bushing as well. No more squishy rubber. I know that the nav system is antiquated but I love the look of an OEM nav radio over the base radio. I use my phone for directions, just wanted the updated look. The sway bar bushings are from a UK company called Duraflex, I also got the lower torque bushing from them. You’ll need to order the Mondeo ST220 bushings. They are the same. Not pictured yet are the H&R lowering springs with the Bilstein sport struts and shocks. I also got Goodrich Braided brake lines. New Brembo pads and Rotors. You can remove the engine and trans without having to disconnect the A/C system. If you look closely at the photos you’ll see the compressor tucked up and out of the way. You just have to move the condenser around as you work and just before you yard the engine assy out zip-tie it up to the radiator support. I know that I’m forgetting stuff and will update. This is a project that started in April. So this isn’t for the faint of heart. Between family and work I do what I can but it is a massive project. Hope you enjoyed the photos. Cheers

In "it’s not possible", what is "it"?

Lol, I meant to say that “for those that say swapping the automatic for a 5-speed isn’t possible”. The parts required for the swap are, manual trans, pedal assy, line from the reservoir to clutch master, line from master to slave cylinder, ecm from manual trans car, key from manual trans car, cluster from manual trans car, 1 wire from 42 pin connector near under hood fuse box (pin 4 JB1) and shifter assy. The other 3 wires will just need to spliced. After studying the wiring diagrams it is just a matter of finding the corresponding wires and rerouting them. I will upload a copy that I have color coded, showing what wires need to be rerouted and the one that will need to be added.
cheers

Anyone wanting to attempt this on the US east coast, I have an entire 03 5 speed with a mashed right front corner.

Mashed right front corner, everything else is in good shape.

The interior is coming together nicely. Engine and transmission install to be done before the end of the year. So far I have fitted the nav and installed the Pioneer GM-D1004 amplifier. They are running Pioneer TSD1602R’s. Installed JL 6W0 Subwoofers on the rear shelf where the factory ones go. They are going to be powered by a Pioneer PRSD800 amplifier.

So it’s been far too long since I’ve updated this post. I just completed this swap. The delay was a result in having the timing off when I swapped the cam on my Lincoln LS motor. So to recap and update the necessary parts for a manual swap in an X400 are:
•Manual trans and related parts (shifter assy and cables, pedal assy, flywheel, clutch and hydraulic lines)
•Junction box harness from the same year car(this harness is a big one, it feeds: 16 pin connector at the pedals, headlights, one GEM connector, 42 pin to engine harness, wiper motor and etc. it’s big!)
•Pedal assy harness, again from the same year! I had one from an 04 in my 02 and resulted in no throttle response.
•Jumper one wire from the in cabin fuse box to the pedal harness to power one of the clutch switches.
•Bypass the J-gate CAN wires. Super important.
•IDS 118.5 and Genuine VCM. In order to have nick@oldjaguar recode the ecm. Not for the faint of heart.
•OR!!! ECM, GEM, Cluster and key from a manual transmission car. All NEED to be from the same donor car. Something to keep in mind is that if the donor car doesn’t have the same options you will loose them. I tried this step with these part from my parts car and lost Auto wipers and headlights.

I feel like I’m forgetting something and will update when I remember.

Many, Many Thanks to Cambo, motorcarman and Nick at Old Jaguar!!!!

In the photo of me driving it was using the electrical parts mentioned above from my 04 donor. As Nick and I had an issue with my DA-VINA 2 and resulted in my ecm being cleared off all coding. VCM is a must when attempting this! Hope everyone likes what I’ve done and I’m glad to be the first to officially swap a manual trans using factory parts. I know another member attempted this but ended up using a stand alone computer as he couldn’t get it to run. Cheers

Thanks for the kind words. I wont be selling this anytime soon. Next project on the car is a remote transfer case cooler and pump. Thematically controlled pump to keep the pesky temps down and maybe help it last longer.

Default Might need some help😬

I’m on the middle of a similar project. Had an 02 manual 2.5. Wrecked it and bought it back from the insurance. Then purchased an 04 auto 3.0 with a bad transmission. Stripped the the 02 of everything including harness, ecu, engine and transmission then had it sent off to the scrap yard. Now working on the 04. currently have the dash out and looking at the harness. I’m not sure which connectors you’re talking about that need to be jumped, any chance you can give me some insight? I had just assumed the harness were pretty much the same with some extra connectors that I wouldn’t need, being the automatic trans. One. Thanks in advance

Hi Thababe92, Not an easy project. I'm in Brentwood and would be happy to volunteer, donate some time/assistance with your project. Best wishes!
