The title says it -- is the radio security code specific to the radio unit itself, or to the car?
My "new" Estate has the touch screen, but there are some challenges. If I swap with the X Type sedan that's been sitting without a battery for months, do I need to have that car's RSC to make it work in the new car?

The code is internal to the radio. Most US cars did not have this feature enabled. So, you should be good to swap the radios. Worst case, since both cars are in your name, go to the jaguar dealership with the registrations and they will give you the codes. That way, should you be asked for the code, you have both to try and confirm.
